Whereas I think its awesome that they cast a woman who's like 6'3, with small breasts and narrow hips, who strongly identified with Brienne and worked her ass off to get in fighting shape for the role. Also who is a good actor.

Besides, I was never convinced as to book-Brienne's ugliness. She's supposed to be big and strong and broad-faced with loads of freckles...not fashionable in Westeros but Westeros is jank anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's not pretend that Gwendoline's appearance is in any way flawed here. You don't need huge breasts to be considered attractive.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wasn't trying to say so, just that those are some things about book!Brienne that she matches perfectly.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody is pretending this or even hinting at this. Please chill.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. Aside from her teeth, book!Brienne never struck me as ugly by modern standards. I half think people in Westeros just think she's ugly b/c she doesn't fit any of the standards for femininity for the series.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She's described as having a massive frame iirc.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
O...kay? I don't consider large people to be unattractive. And certainly, show!Brienne has a larger frame than...80% of the other characters on the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
She's tall but she still looks like a supermodel.

It's true she's supposedly around the Hound's height, though I don't think she's bigger. However, when she was described as being bigger than Jaime... it was after Jaime had wasted away in jail sitting around in his own filth. So I do think she's tall and muscular, but not some caricature of a manly bodybuilder. Like in that fanart up there. (Not that there's anything wrong with the depiction. It's a great drawing of the bath scene.)

100% agreement.

I am perfectly satisfied with the casting here.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
This. Westeros is a judgey asshole place. Kinda like real life, really.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup! I can't imagine it was an easy role to cast at any rate, and Gwendoline Christie is brilliant. I couldn't be happier with her.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (pig pig PIG)

Same. Especially because her description is basically my god damn type. Half the time I was kinda irked that apparently every dude thought her unattractive. Lady is a super swordswoman and built jfc can she save me pls? (Brienne/Sansa is my secret ship)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. She doesn't read as 'woman' to Westrosi standards, and she doesn't take any shit. So they put her in the ugly-box and leave her there.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
There are some other badass warrior women in Westeros (see the Mormont ladies) and everybody loves them and aren't shamed like Brienne is.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The Mormont ladies are hereditary title-holders (meaning there's a history and tradition of them being warrior ladies) from an island in the North, and everybody knows that Northmen are just really weird by southron standards anyway. Whereas Brienne is the only daughter of a respectable minor lord in the south, where significantly more emphasis is placed on things like playing politics (especially with marriages) than something as silly as honor and a lady's fighting ability.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This. She's totally my type.

agreed.

Plus ... that picture isn't how she's made up in the series: in the series, she appears to have no makeup on at all. (The fanart of Brienne on the SongofIce&Firewiki looks pretty close to series, Brienne, imo.)

Dario, otoh ...

Ugh, show!Daario... }:( I am very disappointed that they opted not to do the flamboyantly dyed hair on many of the chars.

Hehe, yeah. Blue hair and a gilded golden beard, right? That would have been such fun. ("Harcourt Fenton Mudd!")

Also, I haven't read the books, but they're written with specific POVs. That means there is a level of unreliable narration involved, presumably.

good point, and the one narrating Brienne's first appearance was Cat, iirc. Nothing against Cat here, but she fits and subscribes to many typical feminine expectations in Westeros.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Also, irrc, Cat wasn't always the...nicest character around. [Tbf, none of them really were.]

Exactly. Also, I can't imagine they had many candidates when the first requirement is "way, way tall and wide-shouldered."
