Oh come on, almost everyone got prettier in the show as opposed to the books. Even Ramsey with his big, gross worm lips got to be handsome in the show. That's how television rolls

Whereas I think its awesome that they cast a woman who's like 6'3, with small breasts and narrow hips, who strongly identified with Brienne and worked her ass off to get in fighting shape for the role. Also who is a good actor.

Besides, I was never convinced as to book-Brienne's ugliness. She's supposed to be big and strong and broad-faced with loads of freckles...not fashionable in Westeros but Westeros is jank anyway.

Except she's also ridiculously tall, buff, and awesome with a sword. Which is more important to me than the rest.

I had no idea who she was tbh. She looks good in the role though, tough and capable.

I mean... none of the castings have really been 100% on point. Many characters have been prettied up for TV. I think they did a pretty good job with Brienne, all things considered.

And it's kind of unfair for you to use that picture for comparison when Gwendoline has been completely made up for a photoshoot and probably been touched up with photoshop. On the actual show I think they do a decent job of de-prettying her.

1: She's not a supermodel, she's an actress who did a brief stint in modelling.
2: It cannot be easy to find a 6'3" woman who isn't willowy to play a part that requires a tall, broad woman that pretty much matches most of Brienne's description and sympathises with her past due to her own life experiences.
3: Gwendoline Christie is an excellent Brienne and you suck if you think that the fact that she's pretty (not even really conventionally so) makes her a bad choice.

That's Hollywood for you. Tyrion's also supposed to be ugly and Dinklage is pretty much hot.

That being said, she's way above average height or a woman, and has spoken about how it was annoying how that always defined her - how she was recognized for her height, and now she's recognized for her role. Which I think is interesting.

So? This kind of reminds me of Charlize Theron playing Aileen Wuornos though, what with the "de-prettyfying" talk that went around.

Gross and sexist are too strong for me, but I do find it ironic in a sad kind of way.

Like, you have a character whose ugliness is a major major part of her character? The modern/live-action version of this character is now a model. Kind of says something sad about our society.

IDK why people act as if she's such a perfect representation of Brienne, she's a completely different character. Like in the books she's at this point naive and hasn't even killed anyone, here she's bloodthirsty and castrating people.

I don't see the "model looks" thing (her modelling wasn't even fashion modelling as far as I'm aware). Though she is probably prettier than Brienne is supposed to be (my partner would agree with you, he's always been saying they made Brienne too attractive), I don't exactly imagine she'd be getting offered roles in romantic comedies if she hadn't had a chance to play this role. It's gotta be a lot harder to find a woman who can carry Brienne's sheer size (it's not just about being tall, she's a very largely proportioned woman) than it is to find a woman with a face most would consider unattractive, and really the discomfort that she provokes for having strength and size that can overpower men is probably a lot of what makes her "ugly" (though I'm not really here to try to argue that Brienne is actually a beauty by standards outside of normal because it can get uncomfortable when we can't just accept that sometimes a woman isn't very nice to look at and that's perfectly okay).

But from what I've heard about the book (and basically everyone here is saying it as well, so I imagine it's true), apparently none of the 'ugly' characters are unattractive in the show, so I don't see the big deal. She sounds like she fits the descriptions of the character pretty well, despite being good looking.

No, but seriously, people can be pretty in some situations and less so in others. They do a good job with hair and make up on her, and while it's definitely 'Hollywood Homely' she seems to fit the role they want her to play.

Why? They prettied up everyone else on the show (except original!Daario, glad they made that casting change >>). This is pretty much in line with that.

My only gripe is that she definitely could have stood to bulk up a little more, and it really showed in the bath scene. But I understand that would compromise an actress's career - just not being willowy thin is probably as good as we'll get.

1. She isn't a supermodel.
2. Try to find an actress at that height who hasn't modeled.
3. They could have gone with a shorter, prettier actress and had just said, "Screw it." But they didn't. They went will an actress who towers over much of her cast mates and dressed her up to be even more imposing.

Oh, sweetie. I know it seems nuts, but "supermodel" is actually a specific term, it's not a generic word that means "everyone who's ever had their picture taken". Gwendoline Christie is a beautiful woman. She is not a supermodel.

This is a little off the subject, but I've always wondered how those few casting calls for characters who are supposed to actually look ugly to audiences sound. One of my favorite movies when I was young was A League of Their Own, which had a character like that. I always wondered if the actress felt bad during the audition and filming if she was basically being reminded "you're playing this part because you're ugly and you know it."

But that's the way it always goes with movies/TV and while I don't consider show!Brienne to be horribly ugly she's not a knockout beauty either, she's just a bit plain really.
