I mean... none of the castings have really been 100% on point. Many characters have been prettied up for TV. I think they did a pretty good job with Brienne, all things considered.

And it's kind of unfair for you to use that picture for comparison when Gwendoline has been completely made up for a photoshoot and probably been touched up with photoshop. On the actual show I think they do a decent job of de-prettying her.

I've seen show-Brienne and I agree with you here, they do well to make her look rather plain. It may not be ugly, but I am inclined to think the opinions about societal standards of beauty has merit.

I think Brienne is supposed to be "plain" anyway. In Westerosi standards, plain = ugly because women are supposed to be beautiful nymphs.
