But do many people write WW1 era fic, and touch on the intelligence world (and British one at that)? Some classic Sherlock Holmes stuff might just be the right timeframe I guess.

Sherlock, and James Bond - which refers to it as "MI6" even in the modern-set films. Given the anon's links below, those are the fandoms where people are doing this.

And today I learned that the M16 is a road as well as a firearm!

Ironically Ian Fleming was incredibly embarrased when he found out it wasn't called MI6 anymore when he wrote his novels.

Except they were so popular that it's become the defacto name for anyone not connected to the field. Even in their recruitment material.
