Yes and need advice from ppl who work out

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-06-04 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I worked out today! Slacked off for two days (went to see Godzilla last night) but am not back in the swing of things.

Sadly, I have sort of plateaued on weight loss so I think I need to finally add strength training other than walking with weights. But I have no idea where to start. Any advice from people on here?

I have the same experience in general. If I want to lose weight, I have to either swim or add weight training to other kinds of cardio.

Here's what works for me. I use the machines rather than free weights because I feel like they encourage using good form and they have handy little diagrams and instructions on them to tell you what to do. I generally alternate muscle groups--arms one day, legs the next, core the next, etc., so that I am always doing some strength training each exercise session. Start with low weight and do a few reps or even do a rep or two with no weight on the machine just to see what it feels like and then gradually add weights. Some machines may not work for you. for example, the tricep machine where you sit down, rest your elbows on a pad and then lower your arms kills my elbows. It's not a strength issue; it's a "my elbows pop even when there's no weight on this fucker" issue. so I don't do that one. I can row a lot of weight but shoulder press hardly any.
