They killed Supes parents!!!! Bad enough his biological parents are dead, bad enough that his planet is gone, bad enough that the Kryptonians turn out to be fascist, classist jerks but they have gone and killed the Clarks in the New 52.

Why?????

Because unless deus ex machina bad things constantly happen to Superman, he doesn't have enough distinct personality besides "woe is me, I am an alien" to move any decent plot?

It didn't used to be that way.

You know what would be a decent plot? Him being a reporter. Not a side job reporter but him having to use his reporting skills because his punching his way through things would not work.

I want a nerdy, "I went to college for my journalism degree and now I am twenty grand in student loan debt. So, I eat noodles every night and clip coupons. But I don't care because I love my job and Edward R Murrow is my hero" Clark. Because a reporter can be a detective too. How would you like a story revolving around Clark's detective reporter skills? But, no, it's AHHHH, Brainiac is back AGAIN!"

Man now I want an alternate universe where all metahumans are supposed to be locked down and oppressed and Supes has to go muckraker journalist hero in his Clark Kent human alter ego to effect any change in the system

He could beat people up, sure but that's not going to do any actual good besides proving that metahumans are dangerous and evil (though that X-ray vision is gonna be handy to look at things he's not supposed to be seeing) - then he has to join up with ensemble JL crew who all have to NOT publicly use their powers and win things the human way with human skills - Wally West IS a forensic scientist, Bruce Wayne is a successful businessman, etc etc

(does something like this exist? if not why not :c)

Er, DCAU/JLU Wally West was a forensic scientist, anyway. Which would actually be a goddamn useful job. I forget what he did in the comics (IT DIDN'T SEEM TO MATTER MUCH but that's a whinerant for another time)

There are a few stories from the late 90s/early 00s where he does exactly that -- only putting on the cape when he finds out exactly what he needs to hit.

There was also a story where he was depowered and Batman taught him a few things -- and when it came to detective work, Clark actually showed up Bruce, much to Bruce's surprise.

"It is called investigative journalism."

Which stories? I want to read those so badly!

You mean like when Batman is actually being a detective instead of a Nolanesque punch-up guy?

I'm not sure Superman needs to eat tbh, but otherwise, this is lovely and I would like to read it.

Obsession with nostalgia. Golden Age Supes' parents were dead too, and so they decided to hearken back to that. If you notice, he's not in a relationship with Lois anymore either, which... doesn't make nearly as much sense.

I'm not thrilled with post-Flashpoint Superman. To be fair, the Superman books were unreadable for about a year or so prior to Flashpoint, and Grant Morrison is good enough to get me to pick up Action Comics again, but I'm not thrilled with the slightly tweaked characterization. He's still the same optimistic hero kind of guy but there's more of a raw anger underneath that doesn't suit him.

The Kents (and Lois) were his anchor and that's gone now.

And now he is with Wonder Woman. (Ugh. I hate that.) I love Wonder Woman. (I adore her own comic.) But Wonder Woman and Supes? Nope. I don't want that. They aren't healthy for each other.

But Wonder Woman and Supes? Nope. I don't want that.

Depends on how it's handled there's a couple of Elseworlds (most notably Kingdom Come) where they're absolutely adorable together, and some where it's absolutely cringe worthy.

New 52 is, for me, somewhere in-between based on what I've read.

But I'm much more concerned about Wonder Woman's changed origin and God of War-ness than the Clark thing.

She's better with Batman anyway.

No one in DC is allowed to be happy anymore, unfortunately.

Man, I already hated that guy (I'm Team Rogues, and they hate him, so I hate him). But now...yeah, I kind of blame him and Barry for this whole mess. (In-universe, anyway.)
