Because unless deus ex machina bad things constantly happen to Superman, he doesn't have enough distinct personality besides "woe is me, I am an alien" to move any decent plot?

It didn't used to be that way.

You know what would be a decent plot? Him being a reporter. Not a side job reporter but him having to use his reporting skills because his punching his way through things would not work.

I want a nerdy, "I went to college for my journalism degree and now I am twenty grand in student loan debt. So, I eat noodles every night and clip coupons. But I don't care because I love my job and Edward R Murrow is my hero" Clark. Because a reporter can be a detective too. How would you like a story revolving around Clark's detective reporter skills? But, no, it's AHHHH, Brainiac is back AGAIN!"

I'm not even a DC fan and I want this. O:

I have no idea what he did in the comics, I think he was a repairman at some point, and I know he won the lottery, but... I like the idea of keeping him as a forensic scientist for the AU. Maybe he decided to follow in Barry's footsteps in more ways than one?

In the comics? Initially, I think he starved and charged money for some of his heroing services. Eventually he also got a paycheck from JLE. When he lost his memory, he became a mechanic for the Keystone police department.

Wally's identity was public from early on, so maybe he had some kind of stipend? As a public servant or something?

It doesn't exist but it should! I would read the heck out of it and promote it to anyone within ear shot.

Dammit, Case, I have too many fics as it is and I haven't written anything DC related in such a long time!

*sighs; adds it to plot bunny file*

There are a few stories from the late 90s/early 00s where he does exactly that -- only putting on the cape when he finds out exactly what he needs to hit.

There was also a story where he was depowered and Batman taught him a few things -- and when it came to detective work, Clark actually showed up Bruce, much to Bruce's surprise.

"It is called investigative journalism."

Which stories? I want to read those so badly!

The line Dethtoll quoted was used in Superman/Batman: Pubic Enemies (the comic story-arc the animated adaptation is horrible)... Although that story doesn't have too much detective work.

I can remember a few other instances where investigation played a major role but no issue numbers off the top of my head.

But hey that was the whole Lois and Clark TV series... L&C investigate something bizarre then at the end Supes saves the day.

...That is the best typo (seriously, it cheered my day up). :)

Sorry, typing up quick replies while at work.

You mean like when Batman is actually being a detective instead of a Nolanesque punch-up guy?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure Superman needs to eat tbh, but otherwise, this is lovely and I would like to read it.
