What do you mean by this? Is fandom not a valid common interest?

I mean, you definitely need things like mutual attraction and compatible personalities and chemistry etc. etc. - is that what you're getting at?

That's probably why fandom alone was specified. I think this is true for all types of relationships. Friendships formed in fandom typically don't last after the interest in the mutual fandom wanes, unless the parties also hit it off in some other ways.

Well, I think it would work if there were several other fandoms. But then, I'm not a fandom serialist; my interests stick with me and expand rather than changing. So if I hit it off with someone over a major fandom, that interest is never going to completely go away. Of course, I'd get bored if we didn't have at least other fandoms in common if nothing else, even if we both stayed in it.

A relationship is going to need more than one mutual interest to keep it going. How many conversations can you have about story, characters, production values, fanfic, etc. before it becomes stale and you run out of things to say to each other?

Yes, that's true. I guess I assumed they had other fandoms in common, but if they don't, then yeah.
