I think a lot of people feel this way about Harry Potter. Did you read the books at the same time you were in (or knew of) the fandom, or did your fandom knowledge come later?

When I first got into them (up to Goblet of Fire) I was working overseas and didn't really interact with the fandom. Then I got back and for the last three books it was FANDOM and MOVIES all the time. I wish I could just go through them again in the overseas bubble I had before! ;p

Ah same. Okay I wasn't overseas in a bubble, but read the books on my own through GOF as well and have always wondered what it would have been like to read the last three without fandom's influence/theories/movie stuff, etc. (Though I've always loved my little corner of fandom. Fortunately, for the most part, I managed to stay away from the truly crazy parts.)
