In the U.S., atheists are... not oppressed, really? I don't think it has enough teeth to be oppression. But there is a very widespread assumption of monotheistic religiosity -- or just Christianity, if they're not making an effort to be inclusive -- and it can make you feel unwanted and excluded.

I mean, it's not something that bothers me now, but when I was a kid I angsted about being expected to talk about God in the Pledge of Allegiance or the frikkin Girl Scout Oath when I didn't believe in God.

And I'm still pissed about vice-presidential-candidate Liebermann saying he didn't think morality could exist without religion.

The GSA no longer discriminate. The BSA still does.

As it turned out, even in the 90s the troop leader had no problem with my just not saying that part.
