Not more than any other faith based group.

Not as much as some of them like to think they are. No, you are not fighting another version of the 60's Civil Right Movement because someone put the Commandments on a public space.

Re: Do you consider atheists oppressed?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. And I think most of those Commandments are rather agreeable regardless of their source anyway, but that's another issue.

Not in America, at least. Globally? Depends on the country I would guess.

I think Christians have privilege in my country and there are different disadvantages that people who aren't Christian may face.

Re: Do you consider atheists oppressed?

I don't know if oppressed is the right word, but I'd say some people don't take kindly to it, but it's easier to hide than other things some people don't take kindly to.

Yes. Quite badly oppressed on the discworld.

Re: Do you consider atheists oppressed?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think they can be. If someone lives in a Bible Belt town where some serious hell (heh) could be raised over it, yeah, they're being oppressed.

Re: Do you consider atheists oppressed?

Every kind of marginalization is different, both in terms of severity and the ways in which it manifests. The marginalization that atheists experience is not as severe as some other marginalized groups, but there is definitely a dynamic in place with Christians (and, to a lesser extent, anyone who believes in a God/gods or practices a theistic religion) enjoying privileges that atheists institutionally and culturally lack. There are instances of discrimination, threats, and even violence against atheists, but because atheists are in many ways an "invisible minority," it's not as frequent. (However, being mistakenly assumed to be part of the privileged group does not negate marginalization, especially since that often translates into a cultural pressure to shut up and disappear.) If it was possible to tell someone's religious affiliation just by looking at them, I suspect that the institutional and cultural disadvantages faced by atheists would become much more obvious.

Not where I live. But I'm sure it's different other places.

Oppressed? No. Do cases of de facto discrimination exist? Yes. Do cases of institutional discrimination exist? Yes. Are there widespread misconceptions and negative stereotypes? Yes.

In the U.S., atheists are... not oppressed, really? I don't think it has enough teeth to be oppression. But there is a very widespread assumption of monotheistic religiosity -- or just Christianity, if they're not making an effort to be inclusive -- and it can make you feel unwanted and excluded.

I mean, it's not something that bothers me now, but when I was a kid I angsted about being expected to talk about God in the Pledge of Allegiance or the frikkin Girl Scout Oath when I didn't believe in God.

And I'm still pissed about vice-presidential-candidate Liebermann saying he didn't think morality could exist without religion.

Not in Australia, no. I mean, everywhere has those, "ATHEISTS ARE GODLESS HEATHENS!" types, but most people I know just tend to mock the shit out of them?

No, and I am an atheist. I'd probably have a hell of a time running for, say, a high-level political office, but seeing's how I don't want that in my life, it's not really an issue.

Persecuted =/= Oppressed

There are certainly places and circumstances in which they are persecuted (usually metaphorically, sometimes literally). However, while it does happen, by and large they are not oppressed - or at least it's rare and it's not something that can be applied to atheists as a whole group.

I've been harassed due to my lack of religious belief and heavily pressured to keep quiet about it, but I have yet to be denied an institutional right or privilege because of it, and given my location and circumstances, I highly doubt that will actually happen to me anytime soon or with any severity.

In America, I actually would say yes. As is any non-Christian.

Anyone can be made to feel uncomfortable or unsafe if they practice a different religion/don't practice anything in a place where strict religion is the norm.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say atheists are oppressed - but yeah, I do think they are discriminated against. Just as someone from a non-Christian religion is. And even in the US it really does depend on where you are.

For most of the United States is not so much active discrimination as it is there is a strong basis in favor of Christian religion. (i.e. Christmas is a Federal Holiday - but no religions high holy day is). And there is fact that a large number of people say they would not vote for someone if they knew that person was an atheist.

Somewhere, maybe. But not most places. In some places they are in power.

I'd consider myself atheist but not AN Atheist. Because it seems like some people think atheist encompasses specific beliefs and I just think it means not believing in a god.
