I mean, you're not wrong. Those are all aspects of fandom and ship wars. Popularity is good / feels good, and there is definitely a competitive aspect for some fandoms/ships. And there are definitely people who piss me off in my fandoms (they ship what I believe is the "wrong" pairing, while mutually implying that I'm doing it wrong by shipping the unpopular pairing (a pairing that has as much hinting as the popular pairing but is just not popular for whatever reason -- neither pairing is canon; it's aggravating!)). But I think if you want to convert people to your ship, you should probably do it by being respectful of everyone in the fandom and not falling into this Us vs. Them / competitive mindset. Honey catches more flies than vinegar?

That said, now you've got me thinking of that pairing in my fandom, and annoyed that even the most prolific and talented fanartist for this tiny fandom (who supports the same unpopular pairing I do) was constantly pestered about how she should support popular pairing A/B instead of her favorite pairing B/C. She developed a hatred for A after having people ignore the content of her artwork to tell her what she "should" ship. *sigh* I resent the popularity of A/B and wish more people would come to the vastly superior B/C side. Ship wars are srs bzns, man. (I'm joking, but yes, I totally do sympathize with your frustration.)

SA, adding more:

Like seriously, there was someone newly active in the fandom recently and I was really excited because MORE FANS. But then I found out she supported A/B and my heart sank a little. So I totally get the whole "must... beef up... our ranks" attitude. Even when I think I've gotten over the ship rivalry, my brain reminds me, NOPE STILL NOT OVER IT.

+1!

This exactly. My experience too. I know it's not everyone, but it seems like the people who are like that are the majority. In some fandoms there's no getting away from it.

I don't understand why people can't just ship and let ship. Other people shipping different things doesn't change the canon, or effect you so why???

I do not produce any fan works for the extremely vocal, second-most popular pairing in the fandom specifically because so many of them are so aggressive and seem to fall in line with the OP. I don't want to reward their bad behaviour.

The sad thing is, it's one of my ships, but it's easier just to stay away from that group in the fandom. And yes I know there are some awesome people who ship it but, but the ship war infantry is just not letting me in.
