(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)The best time I ever had in fandom was the 1-2 years I spent in a very small but very tight-knit circle of fans shipping a rare pairing. At any given time there were probably around 5-10 people contributing regularly. I never felt more creative, and never felt the need to proselytize on fandom streets.

On topic, well, it's great that you're active in fandom, OP. Imho it's possible to ignore fans you don't like even in a small fandom.
upd. Sometimes a handful can make a pairing popular. Not one person, I don't think, but two or three can. So as long as you enjoy what you're doing, op, why not? It's somewhat productive.

k
(I think you might want to step away from fandom for a while, because while being passionate about fandom is perfectly fine, your anger doesn't sound healthy. Not even joking, if fandom is this toxic for you...then maybe you should take a break, see if you feel better.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)Who cares about popularity, really? What matters is how much fun you're having. Fandom is a hobby (or should be!) I mean, sure, it's AWESOME to have tons of awesome fic and art, but the biggest fandoms can be some of the ugliest too. I'd personally contribute in a fandom I feel comfortable in than one with lots of fic and art but is an awful experience (e.g. when I watched SPN I loved reading the fic, watching the fanvids etc. but was petrified to participate in the fandom actively). If you can get both, AWESOME. Popularity may be validation, but it doesn't make a fandom 'better'. Popularity is NOT quality.

Wat.
Just .... wow. O_o

And, what the fuck are you on about anyway? The Star Trek fandom is fucking huge and varied. There are plenty of people to discuss things with that aren't "fangirls." I used to discuss DS9 on the AV Club. I used to be an active member of a Facebook group made up of a lot of different types of fans, most of them older.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)I don't think I've the personality for it, maybe? I multiship like bedamned, which probably helps. Most of my interaction with fandom is by writing, and generally I just write whatever I'm in the mood for or sometimes what I'm prompted into writing, and sort of ... the rest be damned?
I've written rare pairs to controversial pairs to non-existant pairs to middling popular pairs to (once in a blue moon) actual mega pairs, depending on the canon and the fandom and the mood I'm in on the day. I've written several things where I've gotten people to say they'd never imagined such a pairing before but now that they'd read it it made sense, and I've written pairs where people have told me that it was sick, twisted and wrong and why was that so hot all of a sudden, and I've written pairs where people went "Hahahaha, are you nuts?" (for the record, probably yes). A couple of times I've gotten in on the ground floor for what later boomed into a megaship, and rather more of the time I've been sitting there with my few fics and maybe three other people's fics wondering why no-one saw that incredible canon scene the way I had (incidentally, still waiting on the bunch of ST:TOS McCoy/Khan fics based on the scalpel scene in Space Seed, what's wrong with y'all, get on that people).
Judging by this secret, I think maybe this way of doing fandom, while occasionally more disappointing, may also be more relaxing.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)But. I'll take all the McKirk recs thrown at me. I love it more than Spork or what ever Spock/Kirk is shipped as.

You are indeed desperate in an ugly way, and it is because you have exactly the wrong attitude. There is no competition. There is no war but the one inside your head, and you should probably stop fighting it. It sucks when nobody else likes the stuff you like, but you're gonna have to just deal with it.
Also, stop using the word "literally" wrong.
