On one hand, yeah okay, it's definitely a downgrade as far as scariness and sheer impact (read: giving the children horrific abstract nightmares) are concerned.
- This was blatantly intentional on the part of the publisher. It's all very well having adults wank over their childhood nostalgia of your book and how fucked up it was way back when, but you probably want people to actually continue buying it for their children in a decade later than the 90s, and maybe have a version that you won't get continual complaints about. -

But on the other hand, I quite like the work of Brett Helquist. So I'm not really jumping on the outrage train for this one.
