I don't know why they'd fix what ain't broke, personally. Those older illustrations were the stuff of nightmares. I loved them.

I will never stop being upset that they changed the illustrations. When I was in elementary school, the books were almost always checked out because we wanted to look at the freaky ass illustrations (some of them gave me actual nightmares when I was younger). The illustrations are like 75% of the books' scary factor; I'm so glad that I got the collection for my birthday back in the day.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They did what? Fuck that, the original illustrations made the stories. Going to go clutch my copy in anger and bafflement.

This should not be a secret. Pretty sure everyone thinks this. Also, books with the original illustrations are expensive as hell now.

There's new art? New art that is, dare I say it, kind of cute?? Hell no. I never liked these books, but they should at least let them traumatize a new generation. :|

Those illustrations! When I was a little kid, I wouldn't physically touch those books at the library because I was so afraid of them.

yesssss the old illustrations were amazing. creepiest things ever. I don't know anyone who likes the new ones (except maybe parents concerned about their kids getting nightmares? but that was the whole selling point of the originals as far as I remember).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The picture were what made those books so creepy, otherwise, they weren't much different from any other book of scary stories. I have the copy in the first picture, and it stayed on the downstairs bookshelf because the pictures were too creepy for me to want it in my room.

Those books were such a huge part of my childhood, but my paperback copies fell apart years ago. When I heard they changed the art, I had buy the treasury collection with the original art. Stephen Gammell's art is what made those books it's just not the same without them.

I think I'm the only one who's glad for the new illustrations. The old ones are cool to me now when I'm in the mood to be terrified, but when I think about the nightmares they used to give me, I wish they had never been made.

Since I'm not in an English speaking country, I never knew about this book/its illustrations until a few years ago. I'd really like to own one now, because I collected and loved creepy stories/ghost story books when I was a kid. But I don't know what to look for and risk buying one of the new versions.

Some of the original illustrations were so scary, I couldn't read the stories they went with.
But, even at my terrified young age, it never crossed my mind that the illustrations should be any different or any less scary.

Nowadays, I wish I had held onto my old copies. Guess the next time I happen to find them at a used book store, I should grab them...

The exorcist in the picture on the right looks mildly concerned about that ghost invading his personal space. If it was me I would not look mildly concerned. I would be freaking the fuck out.

OP is right, that is a down-grade in illustration.

I actually bought all three of them from a thrift store for 2 bucks each recently. They have the old pictures too. Do not regret it at all.

I miss these books. I went through a phase as a kid where nothing scared me so I read every scary book I could get my hands on in the hopes of finding something that scared me. The actual stories, while awesome, didn't, but these illustrations sure did. In a good way.

whaaaaaaat they did what

I got my copies second-hand from a third-party seller off amazon a year after this tragedy, unknowing that they were out of print. guess I got lucky with the editions I received... Wow kids will forever miss out on the best traumatization ever

OMFG ME TOO. STILL. I am 32 years old and STILL CAN'T LOOK AT THOSE BOOKS because of the illustrations. That is some SCARY MOTHERFUCKIN' SHIT THERE.

[personal profile] beverlykatz 2014-06-04 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Whaaaaaat? The illustrations were what made the stories scary! The stories themselves were pretty plain or old for the most part, but holy shit those drawings were like every kid's nightmare poured onto paper. I know that's the reason they were challenged so much, but man. Looking at the scarecrow guy and the spider egg lady was a rite of passage. :'(

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the old illustrations were really the only reason the books were awesomely terrifying. The stories were meh. I mean, *I* was terrified by them, but I also spend a week after watching Jurassic Park convinced there were veloceraptors behind every door and around every corner.

I actually brought the books up recently with some of my friends, and was absolutely astonished that most of them hadn't heard of the Scary Stories series. I thought they came standard-issue in children's libraries to properly traumatize us all.

At least I got to experience their initial reactions firsthand.

I'm perplexed

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
by all the people in the comments who liked being scared. I don't get it. I mean, I get that some people do like being scared, but it is just -- incomprehensible to me how that is a common thing.

I couldn't even really look at the original books.

My brother and sister loved those books. I liked a few of the stories, but I could not look at the pictures.

I should dig my old copy of this out of my parents' basement sometime.
