I'm perplexed

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
by all the people in the comments who liked being scared. I don't get it. I mean, I get that some people do like being scared, but it is just -- incomprehensible to me how that is a common thing.

Some people go bungee jumping.

Some people dive out of planes.

Some people climb mountains.

Some people ride roller coasters.

Some people watch scary movies/read scary books.

It's all about the adrenaline rush. :)

Just the comments? Haven't you ever wondered why horror films, haunted theme park attractions, and telling spooky campfire stories are all popular and enduring traditions?

ayrt

Most of the people I know who watch horror movies aren't scared of them, and don't watch the occasional movie they are scared of. They're just entertained.

That is... definitely not representative of the majority of horror fans. I mean, given that most horror movies are, aside from their potential scariness, considered rather low in artistic quality, what kind of entertainment can be derived from them if not the thrill?

The first book is called Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and you're surprised the people reading it want to be scared.

I'm surprised anyone wants to be scared ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-05 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that common a thing, more that F!S is a large community and "some people" might be more than we expected.

Others might be commenting on this secret more for the nostalgia of "OMG I REMEMBER THESE BOOKS TERRORIZED MY CHILDHOOD" than they are necessarily enjoying the fear. /reasonI'mhere

1) Rush of adrenaline.

2) It can be cathartic. You "exorcise demons" so to speak.

People like feeling emotions in a safe context, news at 11.

I mean, this is why some people like tearjerkers and such, too, right?
