I think I'm the only one who's glad for the new illustrations. The old ones are cool to me now when I'm in the mood to be terrified, but when I think about the nightmares they used to give me, I wish they had never been made.

SA on second thought no, I don't wish they hadn't been made, I just wish they hadn't been used as illustrations in children's books. If there could be more than one edition of the books in print, or if the original illustrations could be put in something not aimed at kids, that would be ideal.

I disagree. Mostly because I was very into the grotesque as a child, and this was right up my alley. Kids come in all shapes and colors and media aimed at them should be diversified enough to cater to all tastes. Besides, if you give these books to most kids age 10 or above they wouldn't be terrified at all, no reason why they should be given to children too young to get the appeal.

I was much the same way. I've had a fascination with the macabre since I was a very young child, and the illustrations on these books are part of what drew me to them.

Some kids can't handle horror. Others can.

I doubt very much the books would've earned their place as classics if they'd had "kid-friendly" illustrations. The stories themselves aren't what make the books, it's definitely the illustrations.

If a parent or guardian feels that their child needs to be protected from scary pictures, there are plenty of other choices for them to read. Demanding that a product be sanitized for your use rather than exercising your freedom to read another book doesn't sit well with me.

I respect your decision not to want to read them, of course, but I don't really understand this mentality of "It scares me so nobody should have access to things that scare me."
