Unpaid internships should be illegal. Fuck them. It's bullshit that I have to do the work you're too lazy to do, stress out and exert myself so much for something completely uncompensated. Oh wait, just so I can put your name on my resume for a job that won't even consider me otherwise.

I mean, it's one thing maybe if you're actively teaching me and it's essentially a mentor, skill-teaching internship. But it's not, not by a long shot. Ugh.

Internships in general are complete bullshit. I think the only ones that really teach anyone anything are the ones in the medical fields. Otherwise, they all just exist so companies can have cheap or free servants.

Yeah, basically. And some companies basically just havve a fresh load of interns every year which saves them a lot of cash.

In theory, I think they are a good idea. But they must be compensated for any work, or must be completely about teaching/observation (and not work) if they are to be unpaid.

In my experience, writing/art fields often have it the worst. "Design us a logo! It's unpaid, but oh it will just look great on your resume!"

Naw, I did internships (in science) where I was well-compensated and learned valuable skills. Engineers say the same about theirs.

I agree as an engineer. The internship I did was paid and I wouldn't have been able to jump straight into a job straight out of college at all. Another friend got his job because he had interned and they loved him so much.

Eh, I'm going one at an art gallery/printmaking center right now and I'm learning. Mostly what goes into running and putting up an art gallery (since we're hosting one right now) and different printmaking techniques. Though a lot of that is because the staff is really nice and doesn't mind me asking questions and looking over their shoulders.

It really just depends. My friend just graduated as an accounting major and she had an internship at a company and she completely loved it. She was practically beside herself with joy when she got to help during tax season and got to file tax returns for them (under supervision of course, with them double checking her work). I've never seen anyone get that excited over taxes, but by God she was. She did such a good job that they even offered her a position with them when she graduated.
