I've never gotten the "old married couple" idea because no married couples i know act like that. The marries couples I know don't bicker about minor things like that. So this trope makes no sense to me.

heh, i don't think about it like that. it's like most tropes: they have a name, but you don't always know where it comes from or how it connects to the trope itself. it's just a way of referring to it.

My grandparents bicker about EVERYTHING. They've been married 57 years and they still bicker over the stupidest things. So I guess it depends on what you grew up with?

Huh, my parents literally use bickering to show love. They have this whole elaborate system of little in-jokes and highly specific bickering topics that they use as code to say one thing or another thing. Actually, my whole family does it, but mostly my parents. I don't even know *why* they do it or how they started it, since they're not exactly the type of people who find it hard to show love or anything, they just seem to get a kick out of it. It's more fun for them or something. I dunno.

My parents fought and all, but only real fights. And they never stay angry with each other for long. They don't bicker, though. They actually both super defer to each other in stuff. They always seem to be on the same wavelength on things and super protective of each other. And most of the other married couples I know are at least sort of like that.

I think it is interesting how many different ways relationships work and are right for that particular couple and yet seem very odd to other people.
