those "old married couple" duos

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-06-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
i know the "totally married" thing is overused and cutesy but i still think there are characters this tropes applies to. you know the type. they're complete badasses (take your pick: cops, special agents, hitmen, vigilantes, superheroes, etc), who are (obviously) very good at whatever it is they do, but they can't help bickering like they're sitcom characters even when they're under fire.

anyway, i'm sure you've got lots of 'em, f!s. don't deny it.

i ask because my new favorite ship has this trope in spades. i mean, they even do the "lalala not listening" thing. in asl.

dorks.

I don't actively have any ones I really like, but the only one I can think of is J.D and Turk from Scrubs.

Kakashi amd Gai from Naruto.

I mean seriously, they're practically married. No matter how much Gai annoys Kakashi with his antics or how much Kakashi acts indifferent, it is fucking obvious that Kakashi cares about Gai and respects him. And Gai so obviously cares about Kakashi.

Nothing will convince me these two fools aren't seeing each other.

i stopped watching and reading naruto three thousand years ago, but i still remember quite clearly that scene in the save gaara arc where gai carries kakashi on his back. i don't know why, but it's one of the scenes i remember the most vividly.

anyway, they're hilarious together. their rivalry > naruto and sasuke's.

Londo/G'Kar from Babylon 5

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-06-07 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Also, in canon, other characters make references to them being married.

Starksky and Hutch are maybe the ultimate old married couple?

Seconding both of these! I haven't watched all of B5 yet so I can't make any authoritative claims and I'll just trust your judgement and agree. And Starsky and Hutch are definitely as married as they come, whether you ship them or not :) Hell, they spend at *least* 75% of their time together, which is more than most married couples spend with each other.

Steve and Danno

FitzSimmons

Jack and Daniel

Gibbs and Ducky

Illya and Napoleon ("at least we have each other" ffs)

Donna and the Doctor

(Weirdly I dont ship any of these? Except Fitzsimmons a little cause Fitz is canonicly in romantic love with her)

Agreed about FitzSimmons, I wasn't sure for a while whether I wanted them to be together romantically but ghhh that scene, and they need to grow old together talking about SCIENCE over the breakfast table. <3

I've never gotten the "old married couple" idea because no married couples i know act like that. The marries couples I know don't bicker about minor things like that. So this trope makes no sense to me.

heh, i don't think about it like that. it's like most tropes: they have a name, but you don't always know where it comes from or how it connects to the trope itself. it's just a way of referring to it.

My grandparents bicker about EVERYTHING. They've been married 57 years and they still bicker over the stupidest things. So I guess it depends on what you grew up with?

Re: those "old married couple" duos

[personal profile] intrigueing 2014-06-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, my parents literally use bickering to show love. They have this whole elaborate system of little in-jokes and highly specific bickering topics that they use as code to say one thing or another thing. Actually, my whole family does it, but mostly my parents. I don't even know *why* they do it or how they started it, since they're not exactly the type of people who find it hard to show love or anything, they just seem to get a kick out of it. It's more fun for them or something. I dunno.

IT IS! it really really is. it keeps getting praised and honestly it deserves it all. all of the awards.

there's been talk about whether or not there'll be a second season since basically the second episode, so i guess we can't know for sure right now. i know the plan was for just one season originally, but i'm still hoping.

Ohhhh yeah. One of my very favorite pairings is Viktor and Flik from the Suikoden games, because by the beginning of the second game, they're living in this doofy fort together and running a mercenary army together and "bickering like an old married couple" pretty well sums up every single scene they're both in, and some in which others are talking about the two of them. XD

It doesn't help that both of them HAD female potential love interests. Flik's dies early in the first game, and early in the second game Viktor's invites him over for a bottle of wine one night and they have this "you know, if things were different, we might be a good couple, but it just wouldn't work - you're a great friend though" conversation. And then she's murdered too.

I've been staring at this gif for five minutes and it never stops getting less adorable. Not sure if the hands are my favorite part, or the hitting of the table. Either way it's beautiful. (You've made me sad again... Why did you do that?!)

Uh, let's see...

House/Wilson is the first one that comes to mind, then John/Rodney, Mulder/Scully, Steve/Danny (ho boy, do they bicker constantly, but the amount of love they have for each other is ridiculous), Sherlock/John (BBC Sherlock, though really...most the recent Sherlock adaptions fit this), Starsky/Hutch (again, ridiculous), Annie/Augie, EDI/Joker, Tony/Pepper, Nate/Elena, Midnighter/Apollo (except, well, they ARE married, heh), John/Dorian, and Wes/Travis. (Probably a ton more, tbh. I love this trope.)

i'm sorry! honestly sometimes when i'm in a "lookit how cute they are" mood i forget what happened to them and then it hits me and i'm like "wait...". it's terrible.
still, i love this gif so much i want to print every frame and hang them in my room.

house and wilson were the absolute best. it was such a comforting routine, somehow, with house getting frustrated with the sick chump of the week and going to see wilson, and then having a eureka moment halfway through their conversation and leaving wilson mid-sentence to save the day. and now i miss this show.

[personal profile] silverr 2014-06-07 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
... though considering they botched the Griftah case, they're probably not ALL that competent. And neither has ever disPlayed much badassery (although Jadaar might have been at some point).

(Tholo and Anren aren't bickery, Thass and Koltira are too weighted down with angstyness and Anduin and Wrathion are more at the Third Date phase.)

oh man, yes! they went from total strangers to married in like 6 episodes back in s1, and in s3 they were just adorable. i hope that when they meet up again in s4 they'll just fall back into their usual dynamic like nothing happened. otherwise s4 is going to hurt really badly :(
