I've seen this sentiment in relation to some musical adaptations: Les Mis, Phantom, etc. Les Mis it's usually about Eponine, Phantom usually about Eric. To be fair, the characterisation is quite divergent in those cases.

Oh yeah, I've definitely seen it a lot with people going "no, I'm talking about *musical* Eponine, not *book* Eponine" and stuff.

Also, maybe Harry Potter? This doesn't come up in fic so much, but I've observed several arguments where someone bashed some character or plot development that was only in the movies and annoyed a bunch of fans who had to point out that it wasn't like that in the books.
