IA. Incidentally, which fandoms could this apply to? I can think of Marvel, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek...

I wouldn't really call the new Star Trek an adaptation, though. It's a remake.

Or... maybe I'm just a pedant.

Hm...that's actually probably exactly the type of thing they'd have a problem with -- blurring the lines between the TOS!characters and nu!characters and not labeling it as such in an author's note or something. I mean, it's one thing to use the original material as a source for fanon in fic about the derivative work, and putting stuff from the derivative work into the original material. Hell, it occasionally can be annoying even when it's done canonically -- like when comic writers put stuff from movie adaptations into the ongoing comics and stuff.

For me, Star Trek fits as this secret as it describes my feelings on aspects of the reboot films. I don't like how Kirk treats women so disrespectfully (forgetting about Chapel, peeping on Uhura and Carol, etc.) nor the fact that he got his rank without really earning it.

Spock is also so much, well, angrier in the new films. In TOS, he was basically a woobie. But in the new films, there are so many times when he's condescending or just outright mean, especially in the first film.

It's not as bad for me as it is for the OP (I still ship them, especially since they had much better moments in the sequel) but I do wish I could give the writers a stern talking-to (at the very least).

It just seems like they're writing pop culture stereotypes of the characters at times…

So, yeah, I sympathize with the OP.

It's not even really a remake. It's an AU. The original Trek timeline is still in existence in its own universe and sanctioned works are still being created in said universe. Should Paramount wish it, they could pick up where Voyager left off and continue with a new Trek TV series.

I've seen this sentiment in relation to some musical adaptations: Les Mis, Phantom, etc. Les Mis it's usually about Eponine, Phantom usually about Eric. To be fair, the characterisation is quite divergent in those cases.

Oh yeah, I've definitely seen it a lot with people going "no, I'm talking about *musical* Eponine, not *book* Eponine" and stuff.

Also, maybe Harry Potter? This doesn't come up in fic so much, but I've observed several arguments where someone bashed some character or plot development that was only in the movies and annoyed a bunch of fans who had to point out that it wasn't like that in the books.

M first thought was musicals, too, but really it could be several things.
