I'm assuming Marvel or...?

I'm assuming either Marvel or Sherlock. Can't really think what else it would be.

Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry Potter, The Vampire Diaries, A Song of Ice and Fire, X-Men (kinda separate from Marvel for these purposes), all kinds of things.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Trek would qualify, too

My first thought was DC comics, actually...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
ASOIAF/GOT?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's gotta be Sherlock Holmes, specifically BBC Sherlock. No other fandom goes on about "adaptations" when what they actually mean is "a different canon than the original."

IA. Incidentally, which fandoms could this apply to? I can think of Marvel, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek...

I wouldn't really call the new Star Trek an adaptation, though. It's a remake.

Or... maybe I'm just a pedant.

Hm...that's actually probably exactly the type of thing they'd have a problem with -- blurring the lines between the TOS!characters and nu!characters and not labeling it as such in an author's note or something. I mean, it's one thing to use the original material as a source for fanon in fic about the derivative work, and putting stuff from the derivative work into the original material. Hell, it occasionally can be annoying even when it's done canonically -- like when comic writers put stuff from movie adaptations into the ongoing comics and stuff.

I've seen this sentiment in relation to some musical adaptations: Les Mis, Phantom, etc. Les Mis it's usually about Eponine, Phantom usually about Eric. To be fair, the characterisation is quite divergent in those cases.

These are pretty much my feelings about Abrams!Trek

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else here consider Abrams!Trek to be basically glorified fan fiction? I mean, sure, they have one of the original actors, but the fan series "Star Trek Continues" has the original actor for Apollo (Lou Ferrigno) and it's not considered canon in the slightest. Besides that, I don't see why when Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof write a script it should be considered canon but other fan works shouldn't. Unless you're gonna make the argument that it's because they have tons of money and the backing of a major studio…which just feels artistically disingenuous to me.

It's times like these that make me thankful that at least nobody acknowledges The Last Airbender movie.

What movie? There was a movie? You're so silly. Golly gee, wouldn't it have been nice if there actually was a movie?

Is it Hannibal? I know some people don't like the new TV series.

Or more likely: BBC Sherlock? I know a loooooot of pissed-off fans of the original books.

Star Trek, I bet.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I love how everyone is guessing fandoms cause it could be so many different things. I hope OP gets a kick out of the guessing while they laugh, because only they know specifically what they meant. Or maybe that's just what I would do.

(While I'm here, my first guess was Marvel, but the comments are making me think Star Trek.)

This is how I feel about the Hetalia anime, especially the godawful Funimation dub.
