These are pretty much my feelings about Abrams!Trek

Does anyone else here consider Abrams!Trek to be basically glorified fan fiction? I mean, sure, they have one of the original actors, but the fan series "Star Trek Continues" has the original actor for Apollo (Lou Ferrigno) and it's not considered canon in the slightest. Besides that, I don't see why when Orci, Kurtzman, and Lindelof write a script it should be considered canon but other fan works shouldn't. Unless you're gonna make the argument that it's because they have tons of money and the backing of a major studio…which just feels artistically disingenuous to me.

nu!Trek is NOT canon for the original Star Trek timeline. They stated very clearly in the first movie that this was an alternate timeline so it has its own separate canon.

The only Trek that is canon in both universes is Enterprise.

But it is also not a "fan work" because they got the right to make it from the current owners of the original Trek.

Legally, yes it's canon. But artistically was my point. What makes nu!Trek different from fan fiction or fan art created by the fandom in general? You can't even argue that the original actors give it legitimacy since (as I mentioned earlier) some fan works DO have the original actors as well. But as far as I can tell, none of the original TOS writers or Roddenberry have endorsed nu!Trek. A lot of them couldn't of course, given that they were dead.

So, sure, legally it's not a fan work. But artistically I don't see why someone's fan fiction should be considered a less legitimate interpretation of the characters than Kurtzman, Orci, and Lindeloff's.

Following that argument, what make TNG canon (well, later seasons since Rodenberry was around for the first part)? DS9? Voyager? Enterprise? Do you not consider those canon as well if they don't have the explicit endorsement of the TOS or Roddenbery?

There were also a lot of writers for TOS (just check out the link below). Do all of them have to endorse it? Or just one? What if it was the guy who wrote "Spock's Brain"? If you found that they did endorse it, would you then consider it canon?

Yes, I have. I think it works exactly like fan fiction. The "what-if" stuff, the role reversal in the iconic scene...it just screams fan-fic.

With that in mind, I have postulated that the next movie will skip the whales and deal with Spock's brother on an illogical quest. Questions to ponder: which character will ask what God needs with a starship, and which one will do the fan dance (my money is on Scotty)?

This is actully a very good way to describe nu!Trek IMO. Nothing to do with Abrams being a real fan or not: lots of fans writ fanfics that are completely OOC and prove they hardly know or love canon or the characters. It's their right, just like it's mine not to read their resulting output...

PS: skimmed the 2 nu!Trek movies on fast forward... each time I slowed down the action, the lens flares and stupid dialog got to me. Then again, I know a lot of people who love these movies and Mary Sues who use the names of Star Trek TOS characters, so... Since the original owners of ST TOS got their share of the profit and gave their consent, it's not plagiarism or anything like it, so Abrams had a right to go to town in any way he liked!
