I suspect it's because he occasionally (much like Naomi Campbell) throws telephones at people.

From what I can remember, Russell Crowe has (had?) a terrible temper and that has gotten him into a lot of trouble in the past. One thing I can remember is when he was trying to make a call to his wife from the hotel lobby and for some reason he couldn't get the thing to work properly so in frustration he threw the phone at the employee standing at the desk. He was arrested for attacking said employee.

I'm trying to remember something else. I think he got into an argument with someone and it cost him an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind.
