How is raceflipping any more stupid than any other kind of AU? You change a character's gender, race, ethnicity, historical setting, job, etc., you get a different story, because people are shaped by their experiences and historical contexts.

It might not be your cuppa (modern and depowered AUs for historical or SFF canons, for example, are rarely mine, although most people seem to love them), but some people like to explore those possibilities. I fail to see how that means someone's looking for "brownie points" or seeking to "vent about unrelated personal issues."
