I think it would be cool for the characters but I would lose respect for the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. It's about the most trite, cliched thing they could do.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Now matter how the show spins it, I'm forever convinced Red is her biological father. Because the only other way I can imagine the writers to go, and have it all still make sense, would be that if she isn't his daughter then she's still the daughter he believes should have been his for whatever reason.

I find the latter more interesting. That he's projecting the hopes and dreams he had for his own child on her.

I thought it would be cool in the beginning, but at this pointI actually sort of hope it will turn out to be a less obvious dynamic.

Same. That would be the most obvious thing they could do, and with all the hints I really want it to add up to something more interesting.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of people shipping Red/Liz? Really? Wow. I'm glad I'm not in the fandom then. Even if he isn't actually her father, their dynamic is far too father/daughter for me to go there.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it seems to be the predominant ship, especially on Tumblr and AO3. It has the charming ship name of "lizington". It really took off after he told Liz he wasn't her father (and he said he's never lied to her). I don't like that ship either. I tend to avoid the tags on Tumblr, cuts there seems to be a lot of Liz/Red shippers there.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lizington" - seriously? Ahahahaha. Wow.

No, I'm not in the fandom so I was just going off of comments on spoiler articles (TVLine, EW, etc), and I see more Keen/Ressler shippers there than anything else. I should have known Tumblr would be something different though.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not just tumblr, though. On AO3, almost half the fics are Lizzington (I missed a z, sorry). I haven't really got into the fic, other than one here or there, because I don't want to read Liz/Red het fic. This is one of the few shows where I don't even really slash anyone, which is really weird for me, cus usually, I find something.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of the same reason I can't ship Skye/Coulson (even though I've seen dozens of shipfics for them), because it seems like such a father/daughter dynamic.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Skye/Coulson, really? I shouldn't be surprised. I remember how popular Buffy/Giles used to be in some circles. But it's always just a huge no for me. Anything with a parental dynamic is a bigger no to me than sibling-cest (though that's not really a thing for me either).

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's not as big as the femships or FitzSimmons, but I've seen a few Skye/Coulson fics out there, and... yeah, it's not for me either. It's really always read for me as more of a father/daughter dynamic, as if both are reaching out for something they've never really had (Skye for a parental figure in Coulson, while MCU!Coulson treating Skye as the daughter, perhaps he never had due to his loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D.). That dynamic did make Skye a bit more tolerable to me, and it'll be interesting to see where S2 takes it.

[personal profile] philippos42 2014-06-09 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. OK, maybe this is more canonically justifiable than Liz/Red (who are obviously father and daughter) but...I still tend to read Skye as Coulson's daughter.

I mean, I kind of read her as actually being his daughter. I hear they are adding other characters to be her parents next season, but I didn't know that until the end of this season.

(And May is the deadbeat mom.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait ... are there people who DON'T think he's her biological father? Lmao I thought the show couldn't have lampshaded that any harder.

Red us James Spader, right? I only watched the pilot (maybe the second too) and thought it was painfully obvious that he was being setup to be her bio dad.

Yes, James Spader. They've sort of been swinging back and forth between whether Red's her dad or not--seemed they were going there early on but when she asked him directly, he said he wasn't. He's also said that he's never lied to her (it was after she asked if he was her father). Then as they got near the end of the season, it seemed (to me, anyways) that they were going back to that idea. The very few comments I've read from bts people are no clearer.

I watch it cus I really enjoy Red Reddington; the whole dad thing is just a side story for me.

The very little that I saw of this character leads me to believe he's the sort who would recognize a distinction between father and "person who gave you half your genes" and would use that reasoning to dodge her question without technically lying. (WHY he would do that is another story, that I don't know, though.)

[personal profile] rbhudson 2014-06-09 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
They're being too obvious about it, I'd rather they do a big twist and his father really died in the fire. My dad thinks it's Berlin but that doesn't make any sense to me.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-06-09 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't the FBI have DNA samples for both of them, and would have figured it out the first time they started questioning the connection between Mr. Most Wanted and Ms. First Day on the Job?

Yes. They also would have asked, at some point, 'Why did you show up at the FBI and demand to work only with this newbie profiler?' And they wouldn't have given him the time of day until he answered that satisfactorily. Also, they wouldn't let him continue running his criminal enterprise and gallivant around the world in his private jet while he's their "prisoner".

I really like the show. I adore James Spader. But the level of 'WTF, were you writers even considering reality?' is really irksome. Also, Liz is pretty much the worst FBI agent on the face of the planet.

/end rant

Yeah. And it wasn't like he spent weeks/months gaining their trust before that let him stay wherever he wanted. I never understood why any Government agency would set free the 'world's most dangerous criminal' - without any type of supervision - once they'd captured him.

I have to agree with you, OP. I think it would be a really interesting story for the characters to deal with and honestly I don't see any other explanation really working half as well.
