You grew up. The anime industry mostly didn't. There's still good stuff coming out, but it is a bit stagnant.

eh I would say that the overall quality is about the same; maybe a little bit lower, but not because good shows aren't being made, just because more cheaply-made advertisement type shows are being produced to offset them.

Anime was never a fine art; we just used to only have access to good stuff (for the most part) outside of Japan. Now EVERYTHING gets spread all over the world so we can really see all the bottom of the barrel stuff too.

The thing with anime is that in 1980 aired 30 anime shows. Nowadays we have around 120-140 shows every year. More shows, more crap.

well this person's examples of "good" anime are from the 90s; info I'm finding puts the series per-year released at 40+ in the mid90s and jumping to nearly 100 at the end of the 90s, which is still of course a lot less. So yeah, I will totally agree that the average is lower because more things are being produced and more are likely to be crap. However, we can still probably find one show per year (at least) that is a true work of art. The shows that OP chose aren't from the same year; most of them (unless they ran for a long time and overlapped) are from different years.

I still contend that among anime releases, exactly the same number (or higher) of quality series are being made; but I will agree that they are likelier to be buried under a mountain of crap when they wouldn't have been 20 years ago.

yeah but it's not like Eva or LoGH were anything other than sui generis exceptions to the norm when they came out originally
