those are your nostalgia glasses. Yu Yu Hakusho was a run-of-the-mill demon fighting anime that had a LOT of fujoshi bait in it. Sailor Moon was-- and I LOVE Sailor Moon-- a very standard Magical Girl show. Sure some of the titles you listed are true classics based on content alone, but they are few and far between; and new classics are being created these days, but they're just as rare.

No shit sherlock. Stop watching the popular ones and watch the ones that are actually good. Hint: most of the time, in any media, the popular ones aren't that good. That's why they are popular. And ignore Tumblr, they only care for pretty boys and gay subtext.

You grew up. The anime industry mostly didn't. There's still good stuff coming out, but it is a bit stagnant.

There's probably some nostalgia going on here. A lot of those shows you've listed were really not that great - Yu Yu Hakusho, for instance, is hardly something fantastic or something that was breaking the mold. And there was a ton of crap anime at the time all this stuff was coming out. Plenty of it. Loads and loads of it. And tumblr anime is not necessarily coterminous with good anime anyway.

That said, I think the economic model for anime right now does tend to make it harder for things that are out there, and interesting, and ground-breaking, and non-formulaic. So I do agree with you. But there was never a golden age, it's just there's a lot of dumb crap right now.

Ehhhh, I think Free and kuroko no basket have as much plot as any other sports anime. I mean, you can call the plot shitty but it's still there.

I happen to think a lot of new stuff is just as good as old stuff, though being older, it takes a lot more to get me really excited. But Tiger and Bunny, Attack on Titan, Free! ... that's as good, if better, than a lot of the stuff I watched ten, fifteen years ago.

And of course it's easy to pick the REALLY good stuff. Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist... and think anime "back then" was better, but I saw a lot of shitty anime back then, too.

My only problem with Attack on Titan isn't how popular it is, but how the fanbase gets sad over certain character deaths and the like, when there were hardly any character development whatsoever. The one thing that made me want to hit tumblr with tons of bricks was when they've overreacted for the death of Marco, when I didn't got to know much of his past, etc. for me to even sympathize when he died. TBH, none of the characters in that series aren't well developed. I'd rather watch the death of Maes Hughes over Marco. At least Maes had character.

In fact, give me Fullmetal Alchemist over Attack on Titan...

Tumblr has the worst taste in anime, though.

But really, there's like 10x more anime coming out now than there was 90s and the ones that the US, at least, were filtered for quality control, so we got better stuff.

Not gonna deny that there's a been shift in the type of stuff coming out, though. But there's still good stuff coming out.

the most recent anime i like (noir. it's also my favorite) is from 2001, so i feel you. but i don't think it's because the quality went down. i just became bored with the medium and moved on to something else.

Is this where we recommend 2010s anime?

The only one I've finished recently is Princess Jellyfish (HEARTY RECOMMENDATION), but I'm also really enjoying Ano Hana, Chihayafuru, and Hanasaku Iroha so far.

Sword Art Online is absolute garbage. Free! is blatant fujoshi bait, but I suppose that's fine so long as nobody is trying to claim it's some deep and meaningful masterpiece. KLK just creeps me the hell out. I found Tiger & Bunny to be genuinely entertaining though, and I loved Attack on Titan (but would not touch the fandom with a ten-foot pole).

I wonder if Attack on Titan would get as much hate if it wasn't as popular and hyped everywhere. Because it isn't bad, and it was the first anime I enjoyed watching in years.

I have had a really hard time adjusting to the anime industry after like 2007. I hated things like TTGL, Haruhi, blah blah blah and it just turned me off after a while. My favorite anime list is mostly made of stuff like Vision of Escaflowne, Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, etc.

That said, there are some anime that have come out recently that have just blown me away. And most of them are things I don't really hear much about.

OP, you might try:
Mawaru Penguindrum - this was directed by the guy who did Utena. It seems sort of ridiculous and shallow at first but it turns into a seriously twisted psychological and philosophical thing, with lots of likable/hateable characters and some pretty emotional moments
Kaiba - it's a piece of art, a trippy scifi story about memory. Lots of lovely music and a beautiful unusual/retro animation style, and is very melancholy
Tsuritama - this is about fishing, and aliens, and conspiracy? maybe? Has an unusual summery art style and lovely lighthearted music. Gets pretty weird at the end
Sakamichi no Apollon - this is a lovely coming-of-age story about jazz music and friends and it is full of awesome music and awesome animation and awesome moments
Usagi Drop - this one is about a thirtysomething dude who ends up being the caretaker of a six-year-old... he has to learn to be a parent and makes mommy friends and learns life lessons and gosh it is just so sweet
Noragami - I just finished watching this yesterday and it's really great the animation is great and the characters are great and Hiyori might be my favorite female protagonist in forever

I thought Free! was fun. Yea, it was basically a pretty, slashy show with awesome animation and water, but it wasn't anything extremely deep. I liked it because of that tbh.

I can't say anything about the rest of them because I haven't watched them, but I agree that Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho and Cowboy Bebop were awesome. That said, I haven't watched those in years either, so I feel like some of it might been nostalgia. Not all of it mind you, but nostalgia can be strong.

If the new stuff isn't to your taste then it can't be helped?

That's something that actually annoys me. People saying anime are bad as if it's a fact when it's just not their cup of tea, especially if they haven't seen it. Fair enough if you watched it and don't like them and think they are boring and hate the plot/chars/etc, but that doesn't mean they're bad or lacking in quality. It's just not good match for you. It doesn't mean anything about quality. They are obviously enjoyable and entertaining for a reason to be popular. It's subjective.

Also with this "fujoshi bait" crap, ugh. Free! I can see the point, because of how it was advertised and stuff, but Kuroko no Basket?? How is there any slash bait in it? I saw the whole thing and didn't see any at all. It's sports and friendship. Just because a bunch of slash fans build a fandom on it doesn't mean it's "fujoshi bait." Fans will slash and ship anywhere why does it matter what they do?

And then there's the people who go "fujoshi bait" "BL" "yaoi" "gay" just because there's more than one male main character or a more developed friendship between them. It makes me really angry. (I just keep it to myself though).

Oh, sweetheart, you got old! You've seen all the tropes and the plots and cliches now, the new stuff will hardly surprise you anymore. If you think back on it, it's only ever the cream of the crop that sticks around in memory when you think of the good stuff from way back when. There was plenty of crap too, it just gets thankfully forgotten. You're comparing the golden apples of yesteryear with the whole damn apple barrel of today and it's not exactly a fair comparison. Time will sort it out. In the meantime, try to age a little more gracefully. ;P
