No shit sherlock. Stop watching the popular ones and watch the ones that are actually good. Hint: most of the time, in any media, the popular ones aren't that good. That's why they are popular. And ignore Tumblr, they only care for pretty boys and gay subtext.

Have some recommendations: Ping Pong, Tatami Galaxy, Uchouten Kazoku, Hyouge Mono, Saraiya Goyou. You're welcome.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? Popular ones aren't good? And that's why they are popular? Whaaat?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
not that i necessarily agree but are you really completely unfamiliar with this view? it's not exactly novel. things that are popular are popular because they appeal to the lowest common denominator and provide cheap thrills, as opposed to serious artistic quality etc.

it's kind of a dumb view b/c it's based on a really limited view of what fiction should do, but it's hardly uncommon

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That is ridiculously stupid. So the only popular things in the world are so because the "lowest common denominator" is interested in them? Seriously? How much more hipster can you get?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but because they are simple stories that can be enjoyed by anyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess that's why Shakespeare is so famous.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And how many people were turned off Shakespeare in school and never seen a play of his since? Famous =/= popular

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt most people read Shakeaspere nowadays. Classics are famous, but no one reads them.

Think about the most popular books: Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, The Da Vinci Code... Shows: Two and a Half Men, TBBT... None of them are good.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
wow, everything popular must not be good at all, because of this foolproof reasoning. it is science.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice reading comprehension there. MOST OF THE TIME. Most of the time =/= always.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Most of the time" is still stupid.

Something being unpopular doesn't mean it's just too complex and fabulous of a story for those stupid plebeians to comprehend. A lot of the time, unpopular things are unpopular because they just aren't that good.

I agree that something being popular doesn't equate it with being good, but frankly, I'd confidently assert there's a higher chance of something popular being at least positively enjoyable than something you randomly pulled out of the discount bin, where there are certainly gems, but surrounded by a lot of crap.

And that says nothing about how "good" is subjective.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No is saying here that unpopular things are good and popular things are bad. You're missing the point.

I see your point. Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos... fucking terrible. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings? Worst book ever. A Tale of Two Cities? More like A Tale of Two Shitties, am I right?

Perhaps you should have thought this through. :|

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell are you going on about? I hope you aren't implying that The Wire or The Sopranos are popular. They are famous (as in critically acclaimed) but not popular. The Wire got terrible ratings, for instance.

They're pretty damn popular now, even if they weren't when they were on air. Anyway, Breaking Bad is definitely a solid and currently relevant example.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I know. Why do anime hipsters always show up whenever discussion about anime crops up?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because there are plebs like you with shit taste.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
my favorite anime is really obscure, you've probably never heard of it

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's cute that you get so worked up over cartoons.

Or how about people have their own taste and can like whatever the fuck they want. You wanna be elitist about anime? Cool. Go ahead. But stop judging others.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
So now enjoying good shows means being a hipster? All the shows that anon listed are great, some of the greatest anime of the last years. It's not "I like them because they aren't mainstream". They are actually good. Try watching them, they are a lot better than the popular ones like Free or Attack on Titan.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
lol no, I've seen those shows and guess what, I think both Free and Attack on Titan are much better and higher quality anime.

come at me bitch

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So what's your favorite part of Tatami Galaxy? :^)

+10000

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, totally seconding Ping Pong, Saraiya Goyou, and Uchouten Kazoku (Ping Pong is still airing but every episode is amazing. Seriously. The character interaction, the animation, EVERYTHING. The director also did Kaiba, which is another anime I'd add to the list :). I've never seen Tatami Galaxy or Hyouge Mono, but because you obviously have great taste, I have something to watch now :)
