(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)it's kind of a dumb view b/c it's based on a really limited view of what fiction should do, but it's hardly uncommon

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 10:50 am (UTC)(link)I recently went to the cinema for one of those "broadcast theatre" things (King Lear), and the audience was really mixed.
Sure, it's not popular the way, say, One Direction is, but it still draws a crowd.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)Something being unpopular doesn't mean it's just too complex and fabulous of a story for those stupid plebeians to comprehend. A lot of the time, unpopular things are unpopular because they just aren't that good.
I agree that something being popular doesn't equate it with being good, but frankly, I'd confidently assert there's a higher chance of something popular being at least positively enjoyable than something you randomly pulled out of the discount bin, where there are certainly gems, but surrounded by a lot of crap.
And that says nothing about how "good" is subjective.
