I think Free! is touching and heart-warming beyond being fujoshi bait. And I don't think the gay vibes make it less meaningful.

Agree about SAO though. I wanted to like it so badly, but despite having a fascinating concept and lovely art, it just kept fucking itself over.

SAO makes me sad because I remember watching the first half of the first season and being so excited. And then it pretty much devolved into KIRITO IS THE BEST MANLY MAN GAMER EVER HE IS GONNA SAVE EVERYTHING EVER and ugh.

Will never not be bitter with what they did to Asuna.

(Also, totally agree about Free!)

The first season (up to episode 12 or whatever - technically half a season... first arc, whatever) had such strong potential. I don't feel like it was well done, though. Each episode had a time jump, introduced new harem girls for Kirito, and while some fun mechanics of the world were introduced they still weren't fully explored. But the concept was exciting, especially not knowing if people who died there actually died in the real world, what was happening to their bodies, etc.

If I were writing it, I would've focused exclusively on the first arc, stretched it out into a full series and eliminated the time jumps. I would've made it more ambiguous as to what was happening in the real world - maybe some characters think they'll just "wake up", or that time isn't passing in the real world, people might not actually be dying, etc. Then, Kirito waking up in a hospital at the end would've been more of a shocking twist, because it's what you didn't want to believe, but suspected in your gut. I would've made it less haremy, and focused more on Asuna being a badass, and given her pants. I would've included "real world" flashbacks for Kirito put more emphasis on comparing the two worlds, and maybe Kirito's inability to succeed in the real world.

Kind of a ramble, but I loved so much about the concept of the show, and just felt it missed the boat at almost every turn. There were some cute parts, but most of it was annoyingly wasteful. And I couldn't even get through the second arc of the first season, too much embarrassment...

Re: Free, same here. It's sweet and emotional.

Who gives a shit that it's "fujoshi bait" - besides, that complaint is such bullshit when like 90% of anime is blatant fanservice for hetero dudes, yet a handful of shows have the audaciety to feature fanservice for hetero girls and everyone rushes to cry about it online.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
This. You rarely see the same people who whine about "fujoshibait wahh" doing the same about pantyshots, fanservice, onsen/beach episodes etc. on female character dominated shows. No "waahh waahh, horny male otaku bait waaah".

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's just BS.

Yeah, I don't know why everyone's ragging on Free!. It's a cute slice of life show laden with fanservice, and as long as you don't try to make it anything else, it's fun.

Some of us despise Kyoani and their shows. I'm not okay with characters acting like they have brain problems and the maturity of a 5 years old kid just because it's supposed to be cute to otaku and fujoshi. It's problematic.

I... what? I never got that impression from any of the characters. Not even Nagisa, who I'm guessing that's aimed at. Also, I don't know anything about Kyoani, although I assume it's an animation studio based on the context.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Kyoani is the studio that did Free!, but they're best known for shows full of "innocent" fanservice in the form of moe girls with popular personality tropes (K-ON! is probably the most famous example). The average person can't be expected to know there was anything sketchy about it. You'd have to really know about the culture it panders to, but I think that's unreasonable to expect people to know when they're just looking for something fun to watch. The shows appeal to their target audience for kind of creepy reasons but also have wider appeal for completely normal reasons.

In conclusion: Ignore thought-policing AYRT and don't feel bad for liking Free!

But, Kyoani really isn't creepy. The studio's mostly women and they intentionally toned down the pandering elements from K-ON's source material. The show was literally clean enough to air on Japanese Disney Channel.

As in it actually aired on it.

You lose for saying "problematic."
