There's probably some nostalgia going on here. A lot of those shows you've listed were really not that great - Yu Yu Hakusho, for instance, is hardly something fantastic or something that was breaking the mold. And there was a ton of crap anime at the time all this stuff was coming out. Plenty of it. Loads and loads of it. And tumblr anime is not necessarily coterminous with good anime anyway.

That said, I think the economic model for anime right now does tend to make it harder for things that are out there, and interesting, and ground-breaking, and non-formulaic. So I do agree with you. But there was never a golden age, it's just there's a lot of dumb crap right now.
