My only problem with Attack on Titan isn't how popular it is, but how the fanbase gets sad over certain character deaths and the like, when there were hardly any character development whatsoever. The one thing that made me want to hit tumblr with tons of bricks was when they've overreacted for the death of Marco, when I didn't got to know much of his past, etc. for me to even sympathize when he died. TBH, none of the characters in that series aren't well developed. I'd rather watch the death of Maes Hughes over Marco. At least Maes had character.

In fact, give me Fullmetal Alchemist over Attack on Titan...

Maybe it's because I haven't been in the fandom for Attack on Titan at all, but I think the show is as good as most any of the long "epic" series. I've been in fandoms before where every little thing is analyzed, and minor character deaths are wailed over, and I thought it was stupid even then. But minor characters without much development dying isn't necessarily a bad thing. as far as I remember, Marco's death was 100% about Jean's character development, as well as reiterating how nasty the titans are, so whatever.

AoT is more grimdark than FMA, and hits harder in terms of how utterly horrible everything is, so it takes more drama to elicit reactions. FMA didn't go around killing people in horrible ways left and right, so Hughes' death had a lot of impact. In AoT part of the impact is the "anybody can die" thing, and the characters are mostly shallow and vaguely likeable, and easy to tack headcanons onto, so easy for fans to like.

^This.

I think people took Marco's death that way because we thought he might become a part of the bigger scene later on. He died in the battle where the main group's training partners started to die left and right, and soon you were not sure who's gonna survive and who's not.

Marco's death also had a great impact on me because he just disappeared somewhere without me noticing or missing him, and then Jean found his half-eaten body. He we a very nice guy, so it was sad that he died. Yes, we didn't know anything about him except his main charasteristics and where he came from, but I would have loved to get to know him better and see him develop. But sadly he turned out to be a reason for Jean to grow as a person.
