I wonder if Attack on Titan would get as much hate if it wasn't as popular and hyped everywhere. Because it isn't bad, and it was the first anime I enjoyed watching in years.

Alas, being popular is a double edged sword. People resent popular things, no matter how good they are. Not that Attack on Titan is flawless, but I've liked a lot of massively popular things before, things I think are amazing and deserving of their fame, and then people accuse it of being overrated and horrible.

I mean, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but there's a lot of things where I wonder if they weren't popular, these same people would swear they are awesome.

Well, I watched some of it right when it came out, before I'd heard anything about its popularity, and I hated it. It was bad in that hilarious way, enough for me to watch it as a joke for a few episodes before I got too annoyed by how seriously it took itself and quit.

Then I heard about the popularity, and I was pretty shocked, but I'm going with "low standards/expectations", since there's not a lot like that anime these days.

But the ridiculous overreactions, the bad writing/dialogue, the annoying characters, the constant screaming every line, the yu-gi-oh style DRAMATIC FACE LINES, everything read as a joke to me, it was that horrible.

Pretty much all of this. I'm still pretty shocked at how popular it is myself.

Also, I just wanted to say thank you for articulating the reasons why SNK sucked. For some reason, I can never quite say why I hate something other than "BLURRRGGHHHH I DON'T LIKE IT, I THINK IT'S AWFUL"

I think the best example was that scene with the soldiers bringing someone's severed arm to his mom? Or whatever? It reeked of trying-too-hard and taking itself way, way too seriously. It was like a parody, especially when followed by over-the-top dramatic reaction shots from every single character, individually.

They need to learn the definition of subtlety and realize that it works a hell of a lot better to convey emotion that will actually affect viewers. If they'd at least worked up to the drama first, made us like the characters (or at least gave us a single reason to care about what happened to them beforehand), it wouldn't have been as bad.

The anime is overdramatic, the manga is better in that aspect.

This. I gave up watching the anime after the filler episode, 21 I think, where they spend the entire episode showing how horrible the Scouting Legion's missions are and how badly the general population treats them. It was just way too heavy handed and overdramatic. That whole misery fest was like one page in the manga.

The constant screaming is what turned me off. I don't mind that it took itself too seriously, but I wanted to slap the main character and tell him to shut the hell up.

AoT is a decent series from what i've seen, but i've started disliking it just because my first name is actually "eren" and so you can kind of imagine how that is

but i'm, uh, a weird case

This is probably true, but I watched the first episode right when it came out (before the hype exploded), and I pretty much instantly thought it was bad. I kept going for a few, but once the phasing thing started I was like "no freakin' way".

I was surprised by the fandom explosion. It just didn't come across very... fandom-able to me?
