Ehhhh, I think Free and kuroko no basket have as much plot as any other sports anime. I mean, you can call the plot shitty but it's still there.

Kuroko is your average sports anime, but Free isn't one. It was more about their friendships/personal drama with a shitload of fanservice, barely anything to do with swimming.

Anyway, the only recent anime I dislike that people seem to think is good is that Attack on Titan show -- I tried watching it as a joke (the hilarious, constant overreactions), but it got way too annoying for me. I also disliked Madoka.

Classic case of nostalgia clouding how bad those 90s shows really were, though.

Most 80s/90s sports anime didn't have much to do with the sport they were about, at least not in any way that was even remotely realistic. Free is mostly centered on the friendship and fanservice, true, but the swimming, when it appears, is animated accurately and mostly true to the real sport.

Sports anime in general are rarely realistic.

Most of them (even Oofuri) have a huge focus on the games/matches and only occasionally include character development or non-sports-related scenes along the way. Free didn't focus on swimming much at all. There was way more effort put into going shopping for swimsuit and hanging out in abandoned houses than swimming. And even then, the swimming that they included was more about Rin and Haru's feelings than the sport itself.

I was very glad that free didn't do the same thing other sports anime do - which is dragging a 250 m race out over four episodes. Especially when, in the end, the victory comes down to some weird, outlandish "THE BALL IS GLOWING AND RIPPING THROUGH THE NET" special attack the main characters developed at the very last second.
In Free, they went shopping for swimsuits... once. They were in that abandoned pool building in a single episode (end of one, continued in the next) -it was torn down after that.

I tend to see Free as less a sports series than a slice of life series with occasional sports thrown in.

I agree with this, though I'm a little surprised at how people are discounting how much swimming is in the show. It's a lot about swimming. Learning how to swim, training, competing, and so on. It's not like it has nothing to do with swimming.

See, I would argue that there's nothing wrong with disliking Madoka, but it's actually pretty quality - very good animation, good storytelling, and genuinely tries to break the mold. It's not run of the mill fanservice.

Agreed. I went into it expecting nothing more than just a cute, sugary magical girl show and was very pleasantly surprised by what I got.

IA about KnB and find amusing that OP mentions Capitan Tsubasa as one of the "good" ones, since it was an average sport anime and most games were ridiculous long. In that aspect KnB is far better, even if it's very unrealistic.
