Oh lawd, this. Please don't try to redeem Ward, Whedon. He was a shitty, uninteresting character to begin with, then you made him evil (which was mildly interested) but then you tried to justify said evil with a shitty sob story and he turned shitty again.

Just throw him in jail forever (as if they would do anything else at this point!) and use the opportunity to bring in a better character.

/SHIELD rant

I don't think the backstory was an attempt to make him "good", just more relatable/provide explanation? I do hope they don't give him a sappy redemption but I'm afraid they might because of Skye.

No no I didn't say they were trying to make him "good", just rationalize his bad behaviour. Probably with the aim of redeeming him later.

And nooooooooooooooooo. Damnit. Skye has progressed from an equally awful character to a tolerable one. Don't fuck that up with a gag-inducing Skye/Ward romantic redemption arc. I really will ragequit (well, more eyeroll-quit) at that point.

Well, it seems to be where the narrative was going, but there's no confirmation of that. I guess I like to keep my expectations low, ya know?

I actually really liked Skye by the end of season 1. She could get even better. She isn't longing to have Ward back or anything, she's set up to move on without him and focus on other stuff (like her parents, and like being a SHIELD agent, and like developing her mentor relationship with Coulson).

They already brought in a better character. I really hope they keep Trip. I also hope Fitz is okay.

I really like Trip too, and would love to see him stick around as a regular.

Ngl...I was kind of hoping Ward would bite it in the finale. I just found him SO boring.

I agree with another comment here: needs more Trip.

I haven't seen the finale yet -- I tend to marathon tv and my ADD needs to be in a place I can do that, but I read alllllll the spoilers and was disappointed to find he didn't kick it. Oh well, we can hope for next season. >:)

I, on the other hand, will forever not understand the lack of empathy for a character who was manipulated and exploited since age fifteen.

Oh sure, it's sad story, and even a reasonable reaction to said backstory, but he's a boring character with an equally bad actor so I just don't care.

And sad story or not, there's no way they would (realistically) do anything but put him in prison for life, at this point. I actually think it's kind of dumb they haven't killed him off after he murdered a SHIELD agent and attempted to kill the scientists.

He killed a lot of SHIELD agents if I recall correctly, not just one.

I had empathy. Some. Right up until the point where he threatened to rape Skye. After that, no, none whatsoever.

lol he was barely involved with Agents of Shield. That was Jed and Maurissa's show.

it still has his name attached to it, so he's the one getting the blame.

Plus there are rumors that he massively rewrote a lot of the early episodes.

Well that would explain the shitty start to the season.

He wrote and directed exactly one episode of AoS, and it wasn't any of the ones people are whining about in this thread.

The pilot. Which wasn't a good episode, but also has absolutely nothing to do with any of the plot or characterization choices people keep trying to lay at his feet.

they keep trying to lay it at his feet because it's got his name attached to it, the name that got people interested in the show in the first place. i suppose they think he ~betrayed~ them, in a way, because they thought anything whedon was bound to be awesome. they were wrong, and they hate to admit it.
