Aang being a bad parent and focusing mostly on his airbending son just makes sense. He was going to try to revive his culture and wanted to make sure it was passed on so I can see why he a bit neglectful of his other kids. It also makes him more human imo.

Seriously, I think people may have held onto an idealized fun loving Aang from childhood. One of the big internal conflicts he had was the fact that he ran away and doomed not only his people but the world, and he probably thought that - by to make that right - he had to restore his people by any means necessary.
