Copied from misfire below.

While I think half of the Twilight hate - of which I played a part - came from the fact that Twilight IS problmeatic and romanticizes abuse, a lot of it was because people thought it was going to be a new Harry Potter or a new Buffy, and it wasn't, so they got pissed off and hated it. Loudly.

Again, there's definitely issues, it's sexist at worst and at best Bella's one of the most annoying YA protags, but I think we need to accept it was never trying to be Buffy or anything else in the first place.

I wasn't looking for a new Harry Potter OR a new Buffy. Twilight was just embarrassingly mediocre all on its own.

NAYRT - agreed. I hate the tags "next Harry Potter" or "next [insert name]", so it does predispose me to be critical. I don't know that Stephenie Meyer ever had an intent beyond writing a romance with sparkly vampires... but the writing was SO bad. Maybe it was okay for YA, I suppose, but not for anyone who ever regularly read books. To see this rabid fandom of Twi-moms spring up? It was hard to contain my derision.

In my experience, it had more to do with the fact that Meyers "butchered" vampire lore. A lot of my friends were reeeeeeeeeally into Anne Rice and classic vampire style at the time, and they were teenagers, so they were personally offended by the sparkling and the "not drinking human blood" thing.

Also Bella is a horrible protag.

This. I'm not a Harry Potter fan and I'm pretty indifferent to Buffy, but I still found Twilight to be an extremely poor vampire novel. It wasn't so much that I thought it'd be OMG AMAZING and my poor little expectations were hurt, but more because it was hyped and a bestseller and it was a major turdfest of a series.

That was me. Ultimately, Vampirism is supposed to be a CURSE. That's the core of it, whatever other rules you play with. Edward acted like it was a curse but we never really got any reason why other then "eating the equivalent of tofu is more important morally for vampires"
