i completely agree. it's even worse when the people who say that present themselves as the defender of the purity of canon or something like that, as if being contaminated by the gay would taint canon somehow. so gross.

That's how I see it, too. Like, yeah, anyone saying "these characters are gay, you're homophobic" are obnoxious, too. But acting so righteously indignant that other people see gay subtext between characters, and denying any possibility that the gay subtext might even be intentional, it's just irrational to me.

I am reminded of being in the Tales of Graces fandom and the fits some people threw over the mere idea that Richard could possibly be gay, never mind that there was no evidence in canon that he was straight and a lot more that he was likely gay. Him being gay would've changed exactly nothing about canon so there was no reason to complain about it. It was literally just a case of "no, we don't want him to be gay because icky gay!"
