That'd be tempting, if the alternative weren't worse by just about every measure.

The alternative? There's only one?

Being "centrist" or "independent" is always bullshit; I can tell after a minute long political conversation which side the aforementioned is really on (but doesn't want to be included in because of social pressure/negative stereotypes).

Unless you mean a lolbertarian. In which case, yes, it's worse.

*ding ding ding* We have a winner. That's my view on the majority of centrists and independents, too.

It's nice to see you are human and believe in monoliths.

Less that I believe in monoliths and more that I don't believe in children who simply don't want to be seen as "choosing sides." There are true Independents out there. Fewer than would like be admitted, though. Most independents rank pretty notably on either the liberal or conservative side - they just don't want to be called that.

Children, huh? I personally would have gone with the word individuals in that sentence, but if you want to mimic their mannerisms that's your prerogative.

You know what?

I'm independent because I'm sick of the fucking "us versus them" I don't want to be associated with either and I just want to be my own person with my own opinions.

If I get some smug ass telling me "you're actually on this side" I will never take anything they say seriously because they don't get to decide what "side" I'm on.

I actually AVOID politics because I don't like to talk with it. I'm sick of people being shit to each other and stereotyping each other as "scum" and "moral-less" or whatever because of their opinions and stuff.

Election year and voting makes me breakdown and cry because of the stress.

You don't always know everyone's reason, and tbh I think you're kind of a jerk for saying that "independent is bullshit".

While I'm not quite so emotionally charged, I agree with this statement. I've been an independent for years because I have issues with the tactics of both major political parties and a number of smaller (but gradually more vocal) ones as well. I usually describe my political leanings as "grab bag" because I tend to pick and choose things. I'm pro-choice and support an increase in the minimum eligible age for Social Security (which I plan to not accept when I hit that age in life; if I'm forced to take it, it will all go to charity). So yeah. Go independent. It's a tough road, but it's what makes all the difference.

This comment sort of proves AYRT's point, though...

Not really; the neo-cons/extremists have hijacked the right every bit as badly as fringe elements have the left, only those extremists are actively bigoted and warmongering, as opposed to just annoying.

Ohhh. I didn't realize that's what you/OP(?) meant.

Both liberals and conservatives have total whacked-out lunatic extremists, it's true.

The difference is that liberal crazies are in farmer's markets running hemp clothing stands, and conservative crazies are in Congress making laws.

At some point, the American right wing forgot the rule of "You don't actually give the crazy people any power."

Sorry, I gotta go with horseshoe theory on this one. The extremists on both ends actually have a lot in common, they just put different words in the blanks.
