I don't think the fridging trope is bad per se. It can be done badly when the ratio of character relationship importance to emotional impact is incongruous, but I honestly don't mind it as a plot device.

The part I do mind is the sexism/racism/homophobia part of the trope's trends -- the WOMEN in refrigerators part. It's always women, minorities, and gay people in the refrigerators, even in the fairly rare cases where they are also in the main credits.

I thought that the whole problem with fridging was that it was disproportionately female/black/"othered" characters.

I thought the term was used specifically for women. Like that was part of the definition, not just killing characters in general.

I agree, and more than that, I think that fridging specifically women can make sense in a certain context - say, shows/books that have a heavy fairy tale/other traditional narrative flavour, or are set in a time period when traditional narratives were a social norm.
