Isn't the point of slash that the characters aren't canonically gay? Isn't slash about subverting the dominant paradigm and thumbing one's nose at the patriarchy? Or do I just not get why people are that into slash? (I mean, I get the pron aspects of slash, but 85% of slash never gets to the sexytimes.)

I think in fandom, slash is completely equivalent to gay. Slash is used to describe non-canon relationships because there are so few gay relationships out there in media at all.

But no. You think liking slash is.... merely a political statement? Seriously?

No, slash is about fetishizing gay male relationships while not having to bother with pesky vaginas.

Lol 85%. Not in any fandom I've ever been a part of - slash is mostly either romance or porn. I don't know that anyone's subverting any paradigms; if they were they'd be into vastly different canons.

No, that's just the excuse slashers give to make their OTP more morally superior and legitimate so they can be self-satisfied-ly secure that shipping their OTP is the only correct option.

Het shippers pull similar lofty excuses out of their asses to bolster their het ships, but most het ships don't have a built-in "stick it to the man!" button so het shippers tend to be more creative and ridiculous with their excuses.

Why make excuses? I like two characters together, I ship them. Full stop. Nothing lofty about that.

I know right? But no, some people cannot ship something they like. They must show how it's "undeniable" and "the only possible interpretation" and how "there's absolutely no other way to explain Canon Incident X even though there are 20 excellent fics that do explain Canon Incident X non-shippily" and how a non-romantic interpretation is Just Wrong.

Because as everyone knows, the most strong, convincing, endearing, and inspiring argument in favor of a ship is "well, nothing *else* works, so I guess this is the only option."

Double bonus points if you can fit in some kind of snide "men can't act that way towards each other unless they're gay!" or "why would he help her if he doesn't want to get into her pants isn't in love with her?" comment. Or implying that the only reason to care whether someone lives or dies is if you are romantically interested in them.

Not really, no. Slash is just a type of shipping, and shipping doesn't have a higher purpose. It's just for fun, whatever the excuses.

Somebody's never been in the Torchwood fandom.
