(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)If a(n American) character says "my favourite colour is blue" it's not like the other (American) character would say "why are you using British-English spelling when you say that?" because they wouldn't be able to tell any difference. Maybe if the character were writing that phrase down for some reason then yeah, use American spelling, but otherwise I don't see the need to specifically use American-English spelling.
I see plenty of fics in American fandoms that use British-English spellings, and vice-versa, and it's never bothered me any.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 07:59 am (UTC)(link)I've been taken out of fics by a character using the wrong word for their nationality before (eg. an American saying "mobile phone" or a Brit saying "cell phone" or an American character using some non-American slang), but I've never been taken out of a fic by seeing the word "colour" in an American based fic, or "color" in a British based fic. I guess maybe I'm in the minority there though?
