Good, you heathen. Stop calling underwear 'pants' and adding 'u's to everything. ಠ_ಠ

American English > UK English

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Nearly every English speaking country in the world uses a 'u' though, it's only stupid edgy Americans who insist on going without.

That's happened to me with a UK fandom, so I feel ya.

LOL it didn't tell you that we would say "a US spellcheck"?

i've always been taught british english, from primary school to university, but only one of my fandoms is based on a british work of fiction, so my english became more and more americanized. now i never write in british english anymore; not even for uni.

And I thank you for your dedication! I'm sorry for the side effect, but non region spelling and slang in fic is a pet peeve. I've noticed a lot of Britishisms in my American fandoms lately and takes me right out of the fic. So yes, thank you for being one of the good ones!

(I really love the artwork from your secret. Very visually pleasing secret overall. Kudos!)

It did that to me too.
Which in my case was a good thing, because I'm American but for some weird-ass reason I have never been able to figure out, I've used British spellings ever since I started writing. So I guess thanks to fandom, I'm now (mostly) spelling things the way I should have spelled them all along. :p

I just use my Canadian spelling, regardless of whether I'm writing UK/US fanfic. I do try to make sure my phrasing/idioms are country correct (and to that end I do have some one British beta read for me). But spelling is something I don't change and no one's ever complained.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading Marvel fanfic penned by UK fans is my karmic due, I've decided, for being an American who wrote Harry Potter. I think about this every time I see a fic with Tony Stark saying, "I suppose you must do."

(Back then I thought it was just about knowing the difference between "boot" and "trunk" and spelling it "colour," for example, but I understand better now--I want to run about shouting, "Americans say 'a little' rather than 'a bit' and 'I won't' instead of 'I'll not'!" Look, I'm having an epiphany!")

Yeah, the reverse happened to me, as an American writing a lot in a British fandom.

But thank you soooooo much for writing your Marvel fic as American-like as possible! Nothing throws me out of a fic faster than hearing Brit phrasing come out of, say, Clint Barton's mouth. Ugh. After so many Brits complaining about Americans not getting their fic Brit-picked, it would be nice if all of them would get American-picked!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've written so much Harry Potter fanfic that I use British spellings in my everyday life. FFS, I never use 'gotten' any more. I even have my spellcheck in my word processing software set to UK English.

Love this artwork. I don't mind non-American spelling in fic for American fandoms, it's when the American characters sound like Brits/Aussies that I'm thrown out of the fic. It happens a lot too. I've never been in a British fandom but I would expect the characters to sound like themselves there too.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't feel bad about that, OP. It's nice you actually bothered to make the switch (nothing is more annoying than British English in American fandoms) and I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for you to switch back.

There are certain words that I spell the US way, ass for example, but I haven't fallen into the trap of using pants instead of trousers or spelling colour without a u.

I'm not quite this bad but I'm glad it's not just me that feels strongly that Britpicking goes both ways. When I've written MCU fic I tend to go with the American phrasing (I did the same with Batman.)

My biggest headache is always the Asgardians though. I mean, being from another realm they're not British or American but there's been hilarious instances of me pausing and thinking "wait, would Thor say pants or trousers?!" - then I saw other writers using breeches instead. I guess that works. Maybe.

I'm the opposite. Reading/writing Harry Potter and Doctor who fics has caused me to start using British spellings and grammar (except for leaving out the Oxford comma because it will never stop look wrong to me to not have a comma for every item in a series).

uk vs us

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've done this the opposite direction. -_-

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm missing something here, but why would you need to use American spelling? I can understand using American words for American characters (eg. ass not arse, cell phone not mobile phone, sidewalk not pavement, pants not trousers, ect), but I don't see why you'd need to change just the spelling in either the narration or even character speech.

If a(n American) character says "my favourite colour is blue" it's not like the other (American) character would say "why are you using British-English spelling when you say that?" because they wouldn't be able to tell any difference. Maybe if the character were writing that phrase down for some reason then yeah, use American spelling, but otherwise I don't see the need to specifically use American-English spelling.

I see plenty of fics in American fandoms that use British-English spellings, and vice-versa, and it's never bothered me any.
