The funny thing is if they did similar stereotypes (I.E. fatshaming) with female groups the outrage would be through the roof.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But isn't that already a widely used cliche? Fat fangirl?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. The outrage would be about the same as the shitstorm this caused, or even less. AYRT is just poisoning the well with an unverifiable assertion because of his/her views.

Fat people aren't hurting anybody else by being fat.

Tell that to a nurse's back when they care for a morbidly obese patient.

Wouldn't more than one nurse be doing that?

I don't agree entirely with ayrt, though I think it's a very, very different scenario than with MRAs. But...I can't imagine it would be common practice not to have multiple nurses caring for a patient at times when they need to be moved around.

Not really, depends on the level of staffing and whether there are assistants or not. Sometimes it's just one person trying to lift and manage someone who weighs 3 times what they do. I'm not saying this to be a fat shamer. It's just that things become very difficult when a patient is morbidly obese. Sometimes the scanners will not accommodate them, they get turned, bathed and helped out of bed less often because it is sometimes beyond the physical capabilities of the staff. Bariatric specialty wings where there are appropriate medical devices and lift equipment are the best.

Where I work there have been several people go out on disability due to injuries related to moving, lifting people larger than what they could handle or using bad body mechanics. Sometimes in an emergency, you just react and try to grab and hold someone. Older nurses complain all the time that their bodies are wrecked from the long term stress of physically moving patients. Seeing these 50 somethings hobbling along with bad backs, shoulders and knees is depressing.

FFS, getting hurt on the job because an obese person needed your help is still a different story from douchebags going out of their way to hurt mankind just because they can. Pretty sure fat patients aren't fat because they want to hurt health personnel.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Who said that? FFS...

Don't you fucking put *all* the blame on nurses bad backs on fat people.

We're trained to deal with a certain weight threshold by ourselves, and after that, you get help. End of story. If you are a nurse worth half your fucking salt you'd know better than to try to do any sort of ADLs, treatments, or assessments of a morbidly obese patient by yourself. If you are in a facility where you don't have assistants, you need to call the Health and Safety Department because what the fuck sort of facility is operating when it is unable to meet the basic safety needs of it's staff AND residents?

Do you know that in some places that you aren't supposed to grab a falling patient? The best you can do is make an attempt to help guide them or lessen the fall, but you are NOT supposed to stop them from hitting the ground because one already injured person is better than two.

I'm a nursing assistant with a focus on geriatrics. I've had to deal with morbidly obese old people who are a great deal more fragile than their younger counterparts. I don't care how fat you are, I'm not going to leave you in the bed in the same damned position so your body ends up breaking down. I'm not going to neglect your hygiene because 'it's too damned difficult' to get all the folds clean! That's *bullshit*. It is my JOB to take care of you and help you, no matter what your status is. If I am unable to help you by myself, I WILL GET SOMEONE TO HELP ME. It's not rocket science. We are taught different techniques and have various equipment to help us. Yeah, sometimes it might be difficult getting a fat patient onto scale or in a body scanner, but we make it work because IT HAS TO BE DONE. It is a TEAM EFFORT, not a Party of One. I don't have sympathy for the nurses or nursing assistants who think they can do it all without any help because all they are doing is sabotaging themselves.

Is that safe? Sorry to be blunt but it seems like it would be violating the plane's safety codes.

Then again, maybe not, since flight attendants are always pushing their carts up and down the aisles...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most airlines would make that guy buy two seats.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
But... white guys are hurting people by being white guys? I guess I don't really get what the person you replied to is getting at either.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
the funny thing is, they already do

you should get out more, dear
