Office Space

Completely random, but am I the onlyone who thought the main character in Office Space was just as annoying as his stupid boss? Or was that the point?

I actually felt sorrier for Milton than anyone else.

Wasnt that the point? Isnt that why Milton was the only one that had a really happy ending?

No, that was part of the point.

He's not just as annoying as his stupid boss. Milton is definitely the most sympathetic and shat-upon, but Peter and Samir and Michael Bolton are also supposed to be sympathetic, and are pretty consistently treated that way (and Peter does have a pretty unambiguously happy ending tbh).

What's your issue with him? Honestly curious

DA

Personally, he's whole attitude [for most of the movie] just...annoyed the crap out of me. Like, I wanted to punch the fuck out of him annoyed the crap out of me. Which says quite a bit considering I'm almost completely pacifistic and have the patience of a rock when it comes to most people.

Is it something about the performer you just don't like? Like, you just don't like the way he looks? Or is it something specific that the character does - some attribute he has or something he says or something?

AYRT

...Why does this matter so much to you? It kind of seems like you're taking this a bit personally, tbh.

And no, not the actor, not how he looked and it's not anything specific beyond "The whole fucking attitude".

Ah, no, I don't mean to be personal about it or anything. It's really just honest curiosity because I don't understand where you're coming from. I don't think you need to like him or anything. It's just a movie I like and I'm curious about other perspectives on it, I guess. Sorry, don't mean to be critical.

Ah, it was just kind of how it came across since it really seemed like you were looking for a very specific instead of a general "What is it you don't like?", you know? The only times I've ever seen it used are when someone is taking it personally and about to try to tell you why you're wrong for feeling that way.

In fairness, it's probably a mix of lack of vocal tone/body language, and the people I've run across but...yeah. That's why I assumed that.

I don't think Peter was annoying at all, although Milton definitely had it worse. To me that movie got everything perfect about working in an office and I didn't blame Peter, Samir or Michael for their attitudes.

I think he was written (as were Samir and Michael) a little bit that way BECAUSE he was written as a normal person. Normal people can be annoying. His personality type (always giving in and saying yes) is something that CAN be annoying if the person is constantly complaining about having to do things but not doing anything about having to do things.

Though I found him relatable because of that. He wasn't written as someone unbelievable. He was written as someone you could look at and say, "... yeah I know someone like that." whether that means you identify with him or not, like him or not.

But yeah, I always felt sorry for Milton the most too.

We are supposed to feel sorry for Milton, but for more reasons that people usually mention. Milton was definitely fucked over and not even treated as a human by his bosses - but at the same time Milton was a character so acquiescent to authority and entrenched in the system that he couldn't be happy even when he was on holiday at the end of the film - we see him complaining about his service, trying to pull the whole 'the-customer-is-always-right-I-will-report-this-to-your-manager' thing while he is essentially ignored by the staff. He was passing on the dehumanising treatment he received in the white collar workplace to people in the service industry, not even realising it and instead thinking it was the way the world should work. Milton is a character who will never be happy.

In contrast, Peter, huge entitled asshole though he is, worked out a way to be happy that wasn't based on his job status. You could even draw a parallel between how he treated Jennifer Aniston's character, a waitress in the service industry, and how Milton treated people in the service industry at the end of the film. Peter definitely treated her badly at points in the film, but he didn't treat her like she was less than him just because she was a waitress.
