Is it really seen as a "shining example" of diversity anywhere?

There have been criticisms about representation since season 1.

The thing is they did try (more so than most shows) but it was very hit-and-miss, sometimes getting it right and sometimes being cringe-worthy. In its' defense, I do think it did get a lot of people talking about issues because it was superficially such a happy, "innocent" show with cool songs, that made people watch it even though they were not generally interested in those issues.

The problem with Glee is that they often really had no clue where the hell they were going with characters or story-lines, which is part of why some things are so jarring, and people are flip-flopping romantic interests and even sexualities.

I'd argue pretty much everyone is a stereotype or caricature in some way, even the straight people. I mean, the Asian thing. The jock thing. The teen pregnancy thing.

I do agree that Ryan Murphy probably wouldn't recognize a bisexual even if there was one on his knees sucking his dick, though.

And I'm torn on Unique. I think they set her up more as a drag queen, but then changed it more to her being trans. I'm torn on it because I think they handled it well eventually, and even had some genuine issues like the "which bathroom to use' storyline, but the character could have done without that particular confusion.
