Bad representation is better than no representation, and how the characters are treated in the text matters almost as much as their characterization.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
SA! Which is not to say the show isn't godawful. It's just that it's one of the few shows out there that goes out of it's way to do so much for the LGBT community, and even if they keep effing it up it still matters to a lot of people. Plus they're pretty.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it? Or is it just bad in different ways?

I'm always having this argument with myself. I can never decide if I agree with you or not.

I'm going to disagree I'd rather have people not have any idea about me and have to inform them myself, rather than people making false and offensive assumptions about me.

To a certain extent, I agree. Almost every path to improvement requires some fuckups in the effort; something has to pave the way. But sometimes there comes a point where instead of surpassing the fuckup as the experiment it is, the industry decides to imitate the fuckup in perpetuity. And that's when a little invisibility starts looking pretty sweet.

I can't believe I'm defending Glee, but Artie, Puck, Finn, etc were all stereotypes in their own?

tbh i feel the same way about the show than murphy does about me: i can't believe it exists.

TBQH I feel that was said more before seasons two until... whatever season it is now. But I don't know if that's so, I skipped out of Gleedom after that.

But do people honestly still say that? As far as I know it was mostly the first two seasons when it was a good show for diversity, then it just went downhill.

Is it really seen as a "shining example" of diversity anywhere?

There have been criticisms about representation since season 1.

The thing is they did try (more so than most shows) but it was very hit-and-miss, sometimes getting it right and sometimes being cringe-worthy. In its' defense, I do think it did get a lot of people talking about issues because it was superficially such a happy, "innocent" show with cool songs, that made people watch it even though they were not generally interested in those issues.

The problem with Glee is that they often really had no clue where the hell they were going with characters or story-lines, which is part of why some things are so jarring, and people are flip-flopping romantic interests and even sexualities.

I'd argue pretty much everyone is a stereotype or caricature in some way, even the straight people. I mean, the Asian thing. The jock thing. The teen pregnancy thing.

I do agree that Ryan Murphy probably wouldn't recognize a bisexual even if there was one on his knees sucking his dick, though.

And I'm torn on Unique. I think they set her up more as a drag queen, but then changed it more to her being trans. I'm torn on it because I think they handled it well eventually, and even had some genuine issues like the "which bathroom to use' storyline, but the character could have done without that particular confusion.

Gay white men like Murphy are the worse

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with your complaints (especially the way that they can't think of any interesting plots to give to the non-white characters... seriously?), but I do think it's better than most shows, and I think it's done a lot to help with LGBT acceptance (by virtue of its mainstream-ness and the way it tackles tons of issues). For example, a lot of people hated the episode where Finn outed Santana, but I thought it was good because it showed people in the audience (who may be as clueless and well-meaning as Finn) that knowing and accepting someone's sexuality doesn't mean you have permission to spread that information around. It's a way for viewers to learn from other people's mistakes without anyone in real life getting hurt.

It does bother me the way they handle bisexuality, though...

I thought the show did a half decent attempt at diversity in the first half season, when it was actually not a terrible show. Then the writing went downhill fast.
elephantinegrace: (mah bby)

Does anybody still say that?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-06-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, does anybody actually still say that Glee is a shining example of diversity without irony? Because even people who watch Glee (which certainly doesn't include me -cough-) will agree that Glee sucks donkey balls in every aspect except for Darren Criss and Naya Rivera being the hottest two people alive. (James Madison, of course, being the hottest person who's dead.)

Man, I haven't watched since season 1. I mean, at least they do try where some shows wouldn't even put an effort in terms of diversity, but... yeah. It's a terrible show. The first half of season 1 was all I watched and I really liked it at first, but then it slowly started to grow into: "Oh... Oh this is actually really terrible." And I stopped completely.

I think it's because early on, it seemed like it could have been. There were non-WASP characters in the show. There were non-straight characters, and Kurt's father's reaction to him coming out still kinda makes me tear up a bit. There was a non-able-bodied kid in the cast. It seemed like a big deal for an ensemble cast, and for the most part, early episodes were like a big, ridiculous cartoon so they weren't trying to be too serious.

But very quickly everything because over-exaggerated, different characters with potential became about the one note that made them different, and the show tried to straddle "goofy live-action cartoon" and "serious soapbox" and just split its pants and pulled a groin muscle in the attempt.

It could've been something positive. It just got mean-spirited and self-important very very quickly, and every episode became a hamfisted, sometimes flat-out wrong "very special episode."

lmfao does the OP know anything about this fandom?

I have literally never met ANYONE, online or irl, who hasn't criticized the fuck out of this show, Murphail especially.

Grey's Anatomy is a much better example.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I will say that Glee has more diversity than a lot of other shows on prime time (and I kind of thought that the stereotypes were part of the point - I think maybe he was supposed to invert them, but, if so, it was very poorly done).

the people you've seen talking about Glee are morons

a great deal of people are well-aware this show is a giant pile of offensive stereotypes masquerading as "progressive"

It's not, tho. It had the chance to become one but crashed and burned so bad and became what it is now.
