I think it's because early on, it seemed like it could have been. There were non-WASP characters in the show. There were non-straight characters, and Kurt's father's reaction to him coming out still kinda makes me tear up a bit. There was a non-able-bodied kid in the cast. It seemed like a big deal for an ensemble cast, and for the most part, early episodes were like a big, ridiculous cartoon so they weren't trying to be too serious.

But very quickly everything because over-exaggerated, different characters with potential became about the one note that made them different, and the show tried to straddle "goofy live-action cartoon" and "serious soapbox" and just split its pants and pulled a groin muscle in the attempt.

It could've been something positive. It just got mean-spirited and self-important very very quickly, and every episode became a hamfisted, sometimes flat-out wrong "very special episode."

But! But! Artie was played by an able-bodied person1!! So that totes disqualifies him!

Or I've been told. : /

No need to do the mocking tumblr-speak.

Yeah, actually, Artie being played by an able-bodied person is kind of less-than-ideal. It's nice that the character was the sort of character we rarely see in long-term roles, but I don't think it's horrible to think, hey, it would've been nice to have given the role to a non-able-bodied actor as well.

It was kind of one of those early choice Glee made that should've cued us in to how phoned in a lot of the diversity would be.
